Arrest Captured on Camera
Newly released body-camera footage reveals the chaotic arrest of 46-year-old Saliya Siby in Miami Beach. Police said Siby, dressed in fatigues, was armed with a knife, carrying cans of accelerants, and threatened to blow himself up while disrupting traffic near West 41st Street and Royal Palm Avenue. The video shows Siby shouting “Shoot! Shoot!” at officers before being subdued. During the struggle, Siby allegedly head-butted an officer, causing an injury that required stitches at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Charges and Court Proceedings
Miami-Dade prosecutors filed three felony and two misdemeanor charges against Siby, including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, threat to throw a bomb, resisting arrest with violence, resisting without violence, and carrying a weapon. At a Sunday bond hearing, prosecutors secured a motion for pre-trial detention. Siby is currently being held at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. His next court date is September 18, with arraignment scheduled for October 14 before Judge Carmen R. Cabarga.
Police Response
Despite Siby’s threats, officers did not fire their weapons. Police credit de-escalation training for preventing further violence. “Our officer did exactly what we trained to do,” Officer Bess emphasized. The case underscores heightened concerns in Miami Beach over public safety and the risks police face when confronting suspects making bomb threats in densely populated areas.
