The Mayor, the Apple Watch, and the Crawl Through Wellington
West Palm Beach’s mayor was found injured, confused, and crawling through a suburban cul-de-sac in the middle of the night. The official explanation is thin. The footage raises more questions than it answers.
“I had a couple of drinks.”
The words come straight from West Palm Beach Mayor Keith James, captured on police body camera video as paramedics loaded him onto a gurney outside Wellington Regional Medical Center just after 1 a.m. on June 29. He told officers he had been out in Delray Beach with friends, took an Uber home, and was dropped off at the wrong place. He said he tried to walk home. He did not know where he was.
To be clear:
The mayor was found crawling on the ground in a gated community, bleeding from his elbow, disoriented, and unaware of where he lived. And it wasn’t a neighbor or passerby who called for help. It was his Apple Watch’s “hard fall” emergency alert system automatically dialing 911.
What the Video Shows
Police and paramedics tracked the alert to a cul-de-sac roughly three blocks from the mayor’s home. Body-camera footage shows James confused, responding slowly, and unaware of his injury.
“He doesn’t know how he got where he was. He was found crawling on the sidewalk,” a paramedic tells police in the recording.
“No, no, no, no. I hurt my elbow?” the mayor asks as responders tell him he’s bleeding.
There is no evidence of a medical emergency apart from intoxication and the fall. No stroke. No seizure. No fainting episode. Just the mayor unable to explain where he was or how he ended up there.
The Unknown Woman
The Apple Watch alert also pinged an unidentified woman, who was at James’ home when police arrived.
“It said hard fall notification… then I saw the text that showed the location,” she told officers.
City officials have not identified the woman, clarified her relationship to the mayor, or explained why she had access to his device alerts. This matters because the mayor is a public official with ongoing ethics scrutiny and previous allegations of retaliatory conduct in office. Transparency isn’t optional here.
City Hall’s Response: Evasive, Minimal, and Uninformative
After three days of inquiries, the city’s communications director released only a short written statement:
“Keith James was disoriented and fell near his home shortly after getting out of a ride-share vehicle. He suffered a minor injury to his elbow and was taken to the hospital as a precaution.”
No explanation for:
• Why he was three blocks from his home
• Why he was crawling
• Why he didn’t call 911
• Why he couldn’t say where he lived
• Whether alcohol was involved beyond “a couple of drinks”
• Who the woman was
• Whether a medical evaluation found cause other than intoxication
Follow-up questions were ignored. The mayor left town for vacation shortly after.
The Bigger Picture
Keith James is not just another local official. He oversees a major coastal city with billion-dollar development stakes, ongoing corruption battles, and a growing political schism between City Hall and the business community. Yet when the mayor is found crawling through a gated neighborhood in the dark, bleeding and disoriented, the public is told essentially nothing.
This is not about personal embarrassment. It’s about whether the people running South Florida cities are operating with transparency and fitness of leadership. If residents, business owners, and political observers in Palm Beach feel déjà vu, it’s justified. Florida has a long history of leaders trying to manage crisis optics rather than the crisis itself.
This is one of those moments. And voters notice when someone isn’t being straight with them.
