Carson Beck didn’t take long to etch his name into Miami Hurricanes history. The transfer quarterback completed his first 15 passes to set a new single-game school record, leading No. 5 Miami to a 45-3 rout of Bethune-Cookman on Saturday night at Hard Rock Stadium.
Beck finished 22 of 24 for 264 yards and two touchdowns, breaking Vinny Testaverde’s mark of 14 straight completions set against Oklahoma in 1986. His efficiency set the tone for a Miami offense that scored touchdowns on its first five possessions before shifting into cruise control.
“Carson’s command was outstanding,” Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal said. “He was decisive, accurate, and really showed why we brought him here.”
Beck’s touchdown passes both went to CJ Daniels, who hauled in a 40-yard strike in the first quarter and added a 5-yard score before halftime. The quarterback has now thrown 185 consecutive passes without an interception, a streak that began last season while he was at Georgia.
On the ground, Mark Fletcher Jr. powered his way to two touchdowns, while Marty Brown and Girard Pringle also found the end zone. The Hurricanes (2-0) substituted heavily after halftime, with the game well in hand by intermission.
Bethune-Cookman (0-2) managed just a 32-yard field goal from Juan Dominguez in the second quarter. Quarterback Timmy McClain was efficient but limited, completing 13 of 15 passes for 86 yards against Miami’s defense.
Both teams dealt with early ejections for targeting penalties. Miami linebacker Wesley Bissainthe was flagged on the opening series, and Wildcats safety Jordan Johnson was disqualified in the third quarter, which means Johnson will miss the first half of next week’s game at South Carolina State.
The win improved Miami to 8-0 all-time against Bethune-Cookman. The Wildcats, meanwhile, have endured a brutal opening stretch in South Florida, losing to FIU and Miami by a combined 87-12 margin. Through two games, Bethune-Cookman’s offense has run 119 plays and produced only four field goals.
Bethune-Cookman: The Wildcats’ lack of scoring punch remains glaring. Despite two efficient passing games from McClain, they have yet to find the end zone this season.
Miami: The Hurricanes’ offense looked sharp and disciplined with Beck at the controls. Miami now turns to a key stretch of in-state matchups that will go a long way in shaping its playoff hopes.
Bethune-Cookman: Visits South Carolina State next Saturday. Miami: Hosts South Florida next Saturday in a high-profile in-state clash.
