Zack Wheeler Leads Phillies With Historic Start

Zack Wheeler delivered a dominant performance on Tuesday night, striking out 11 batters including a franchise-record seven consecutive strikeouts to begin the game as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 6-4 and moved closer to securing a spot in the postseason. Brandon Marsh provided a major spark offensively, homering, doubling and driving in three runs for Philadelphia. The Phillies’ timely hitting proved important after Milwaukee erased their early advantage and appeared poised to take control late in the game. William Contreras drove in three runs for Milwaukee, which entered the night having already secured the National League Central title.

Phillies Tighten Wild Card Race

The victory moved Philadelphia to 87-70, keeping the Phillies tied with the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres for the three National League wild-card positions. The three teams sit four games ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks with five games remaining in the regular season.

Philadelphia holds the tiebreaker over San Diego but does not hold the tiebreaker over Chicago, making each remaining game increasingly important in the race for postseason positioning. Meanwhile, Milwaukee’s loss came on a night when the Brewers secured another significant postseason advantage.

Cincinnati’s 4-0 victory over Atlanta gave Milwaukee a bye in the wild-card round and home-field advantage throughout the Division Series. The Brewers fell to 13-6 in September and were unable to extend their franchise-record win total of 98, which they established Sunday with a 3-0 victory over Baltimore.

Wednesday Pitching Matchup

The Phillies and Brewers will continue their three-game series Wednesday night. Milwaukee will send right-hander Logan Henderson to the mound with a 10-3 record and 2.51 ERA, while Philadelphia counters with right-hander Aaron Nola, who enters with a 7-10 record and 4.49 ERA.
