Pro Surfer Makai McNamara Regains Consciousness After Near-Fatal Pipeline Wipeout
PUPUKEA, Hawaii – Pro surfer Makai McNamara has regained consciousness after a harrowing accident at the Banzai Pipeline on Oahu’s North Shore over the weekend. The incident, which left him in a coma, has sparked an outpouring of support from the surfing community.
McNamara was caught in a massive wave while surfing at the notoriously dangerous break, causing him to hit his head on a reef. Witnesses say he was submerged for nearly two minutes before fellow surfers reached him.
A group of surfers and lifeguards quickly responded, pulling McNamara to shore and administering life-saving efforts, including CPR. He reportedly coughed up water as resuscitation efforts continued until paramedics arrived. He was then transported to a hospital, where he remained in a coma before regaining consciousness.
Following the accident, McNamara’s brother, Landon, expressed gratitude to those who helped save his life. In an Instagram post, he thanked the individuals who rushed to McNamara’s aid, including fellow surfer Eli Olson and members of the North Shore Lifeguard Association.
“Thank you so much to everyone who helped get Makai McNamara to the shore today and save his life,” Landon wrote. “Me and my family are grateful for all the hands that helped. Was so scary not seeing him come up after falling on that wave.”
The Pipeline break, known for its powerful waves and shallow reef, has claimed the lives of multiple surfers over the years. McNamara, a respected competitor in the surf community, is now in recovery, though the extent of his injuries remains unclear.
The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of big-wave surfing, even for the most experienced professionals.
