In a dominant display to kick off their 2024 season, the South Florida Bulls secured a resounding 48-3 victory over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday night. Powered by a relentless ground attack, the Bulls ran for five touchdowns, amassing 231 rushing yards while holding Bethune-Cookman to just 48 yards on the ground.
The game started with a bang as South Florida’s quarterback, Byrum Brown, executed a perfect play fake before sprinting 42 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown. This electrifying run set the tone for the Bulls, who quickly established control of the game.
Running back Kelley Joiner led the charge for South Florida, scoring two touchdowns on short runs and racking up 78 yards on 14 carries. His efforts were complemented by fellow backs Ta’Ron Keith and Nay’Quan Wright, who both found the end zone from the 1-yard line. In addition to his rushing prowess, Brown showed poise in the pocket, completing 13 of 20 passes for 152 yards, helping to keep the Wildcats’ defense on their heels throughout the game.
The Bulls’ offensive efficiency was matched by their stifling defense. South Florida’s defense dominated the line of scrimmage, limiting the Wildcats to a mere 170 total yards despite Bethune-Cookman holding the ball for nearly 38 minutes. The Wildcats’ only points came late in the first half when Cade Hechter nailed a 48-yard field goal with just 22 seconds remaining.
Backup quarterback Bryce Archie also made the most of his opportunity, throwing a 15-yard touchdown pass to Michael Brown-Stephens late in the fourth quarter, further extending the Bulls’ lead.
This comprehensive victory not only highlights South Florida’s potential this season but also sets a strong foundation for the team as they aim to build momentum in the weeks ahead. With a balanced offense and a suffocating defense, the Bulls made an early statement that they are a force to be reckoned with in 2024.
