Rays Take 2-0 ALDS Lead Over Yankees After Capitalizing on Defensive Mistakes

Tampa Bay Rays Put The New York Yankees On The Brink of Elimination

Richie Palacios delivered a two run single during a four run fifth inning, and Tampa Bay took full advantage of New York’s defensive miscues to beat Cam Schlittler and the Yankees 5-2 on Monday night, taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the American League Division Series.

The Rays are now one victory away from reaching the American League Championship Series. Game 3 of the best-of-five series is Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium, where Tampa Bay will have an opportunity to complete the sweep.

Rays Take Control With Four Run Fifth

Tampa Bay’s decisive rally began when Jonathan Aranda lined a single to open the fifth inning before Junior Caminero followed with a double to right-center. With the Yankees’ infield drawn in, Liam Hicks hit a slow grounder toward second base that allowed Aranda to score and put the Rays ahead 2-1.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. was positioned several feet deeper than the rest of New York’s infield, leaving him with no play at the plate. Chandler Simpson then hit a grounder that shortstop George Lombard Jr. couldn’t handle cleanly, allowing Caminero to score and giving Tampa Bay a 3-1 lead. The play was initially ruled a hit before being changed to an error and eventually recorded as a fielder’s choice.

Brent Headrick replaced Schlittler and struck out Victor Mesa Jr., but the Rays kept the pressure on. Simpson stole second, and Jonny DeLuca reached when Lombard’s throw to first sailed wide, giving New York its fourth error of the game. Palacios followed with a hard single to center that scored Simpson and DeLuca, stretching Tampa Bay’s advantage to 5-1.

The Yankees became the first team to commit three errors in the first inning of a postseason game since the Oakland Athletics in Game 1 of the 1975 American League Championship Series against Boston, according to Sportsnet Stats.

Yankees Struggle Without Aaron Judge

Ben Rice provided New York with its biggest offensive moments, hitting two home runs, including a game tying blast in the fourth inning. Rice sent a 2-2 changeup into the right field seats to tie the game at 1, ending the Yankees’ scoreless drought in the ALDS.

Rice hit 41 home runs during the regular season, and his homer briefly awakened a Yankees crowd that had been largely drowned out by the cowbell ringing Rays fans. But Tampa Bay quickly reclaimed control. New York is now on the verge of elimination and has scored just two runs through the first two games of the series.

The Yankees’ offensive struggles have been compounded by the absence of three-time AL MVP Aaron Judge, who remains sidelined by a calf injury. The Yankees’ World Series championship drought could reach 17 seasons if they are eliminated Wednesday.

Rays Get Another Strong Pitching Performance

The Rays did not need much more than the five runs their offense produced thanks to another impressive performance from their pitching staff. Freddy Peralta allowed one run and three hits over 4 2/3 innings before Cam Booser entered and escaped a bases loaded jam in the fifth. Ian Seymour then allowed one run over three innings before Bryan Baker closed the door with a perfect ninth inning for his second save of the series.

The Tampa Bay bullpen once again proved capable of protecting a lead against a Yankees lineup that has struggled to generate consistent offense. Schlittler, who went 14-6 with a 1.95 ERA during the regular season and dominated Boston in the opening game of the wild-card round, was unable to match his previous postseason performance. The rookie right-hander lasted 4 1/3 innings, allowing four runs, two earned, on six hits while striking out only two.

Yankees Face Elimination in Game 3

The Yankees will return home Wednesday night needing to win three consecutive games to keep their season alive. Left-hander Max Fried is the projected starter for New York in Game 3 after going 5-5 with a 2.80 ERA during the regular season. The Rays are expected to counter with right-hander Nick Martinez, who went 15-6 with a 3.10 ERA.

Tampa Bay now has two opportunities to win one game and advance to the ALCS, while New York must find answers quickly after being held to two runs in the first two games of the series. With the Rays one victory away from advancing and the Yankees facing elimination, the pressure has shifted squarely to New York heading into Game 3 at Yankee Stadium.
