Sovereignty delivered another career-defining performance in the Grade 1, $1.25 million DraftKings Travers Stakes. The dual Classic-winner and heavy 1-4 favorite stormed from off the pace under a patient ride by Junior Alvarado, powering home to a 10-length romp in the 10-furlong “Mid-Summer Derby.” The dazzling effort provided Mott with his first Travers triumph and gave owner-breeder Godolphin its third victory in Saratoga’s crown jewel, following Alpha’s 2012 dead-heat and Essential Quality’s 2021 win.
For Alvarado, the moment marked yet another milestone in a dream season. Already the winning rider of the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes presented by NYRA Bets aboard Sovereignty, the 38-year-old jockey finally added the prestigious Man o’ War Cup to his résumé. Sovereignty also became the first Derby-Belmont-Travers winner since Thunder Gulch in 1995.
“This horse has answered every question we’ve asked of him,” said Mott. “We had confidence in him, but you never take a race like the Travers for granted. To see him win like this—it’s very special.”
Breaking from post 4, Sovereignty was unhurried early, settling last of five as Magnitude set the pace in 23.47 seconds for the opening quarter. Bracket Buster and McAfee pressed from close range, while Strategic Focus saved ground.
Alvarado never panicked. As the leaders carved out a half in 47.43 and three-quarters in 1:11.23, he gently urged Sovereignty forward, splitting rivals with ease and circling wide into contention. By the mile marker in 1:36.02, the bay son of Into Mischief was in full flight.
Bracket Buster briefly took command turning for home, but Sovereignty’s devastating turn of foot quickly ended the suspense. Drawing away under a hand ride, he stopped the clock in 2:00.84 for 1 1/4 miles, geared down in the final strides.
Bracket Buster, trained by Vicki Oliver and ridden by Luis Saez, earned a valiant runner-up finish, 10 3/4 lengths clear of Magnitude. McAfee and Strategic Focus completed the order of finish.
Sovereignty’s Travers score capped an extraordinary campaign that already includes victories in the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, Fountain of Youth, and Jim Dandy. His win in the Travers made him the 14th horse to complete the Jim Dandy/Travers double, joining a roster of elite sophomores.
“He’s just a fighter,” Alvarado said. “Even when things didn’t go perfectly early, he stayed calm and waited for the right moment. Once I asked, he exploded. I’ve never ridden a horse with this kind of power.”
With the $687,500 winner’s share, Sovereignty boosted his career earnings past $5.8 million, improving his record to 9 starts, 6 wins, 2 seconds.
Godolphin USA bloodstock director Michael Banahan praised both horse and connections, noting Sovereignty’s seamless progression from Derby glory to midsummer dominance. “Bill and Junior have managed him brilliantly. He’s stamped himself as one of our very best homebreds.”
All signs now point to a highly anticipated clash against older horses in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic on November 1 at Del Mar.
“He’s earned the chance to take on the best in the world,” Banahan said. “We’ll let him tell us, but right now, the Classic is the goal.”
