Student Pilot Forced to Land
A routine flight lesson in Argentina turned into an unimaginable ordeal after a flight instructor allegedly jumped from a small training aircraft while it was still in the air, leaving his student pilot alone in the cockpit to safely land the plane.
The incident happened near the city of Córdoba during a training flight operated by a local aviation school. Authorities identified the instructor as 42 year old Leandro Andrés Bertazzo. According to investigators, the aircraft was flying at a relatively low altitude when Bertazzo unexpectedly unbuckled his seatbelt, opened the aircraft door, and jumped from the plane without a parachute.
His student, a 22 year old woman who was still in training, was suddenly left as the aircraft’s only occupant.
Student Keeps Her Composure
Despite witnessing the traumatic event, the student remained calm enough to radio for help and follow emergency instructions from air traffic controllers and flight school staff.
She successfully landed the Cessna 150 at Coronel Olmedo Airport without suffering any injuries. Aviation officials credited her quick thinking and training with preventing what could have become a second tragedy.
The aircraft also landed without significant damage.
Investigation Focuses on Instructor’s Actions
Emergency crews later recovered Bertazzo’s body near the flight path. Argentine authorities have launched an investigation, although officials believe the instructor intentionally exited the aircraft.
Investigators are reviewing flight data, interviewing witnesses, and examining the circumstances leading up to the incident. Authorities have not reported any evidence of mechanical failure or another emergency aboard the aircraft before the instructor left the plane.
Family Says He Recently Sought Psychiatric Care
In the aftermath of the tragedy, officials from the flight school said Bertazzo’s family informed them he had recently sought help for his mental health.
According to the school, his family said he had visited a psychiatrist just one week before the fatal flight. School officials also said they had not been aware he was receiving psychiatric treatment and that colleagues had not noticed any warning signs suggesting he was in immediate distress.
Family members later said Bertazzo had been experiencing personal difficulties but have not publicly shared additional details.
Aviation Community Reflects on Mental Health
The incident has sparked renewed conversations within the aviation industry about mental health awareness and support for pilots and flight instructors.
While aviation professionals undergo regular medical evaluations, experts have long acknowledged that mental health struggles can be difficult to identify, particularly when individuals choose not to disclose personal challenges.
For the young student pilot, what began as a routine lesson became an extraordinary test of courage and composure. Her successful emergency landing likely prevented an even greater tragedy, while investigators continue working to understand what led to the instructor’s final actions.
