Lauderhill Man Arrested in Broad-Daylight Shooting of Two Teenagers
Suspect charged with attempted murder after surveillance video captures brazen attack
A 33-year-old man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly shooting two teenagers in broad daylight outside a Lauderhill apartment complex last week, according to police.
Kurt Cranston, of Lauderhill, was arrested Friday and charged with two counts of attempted murder in connection with the June 4 shooting that left the two teens hospitalized with gunshot wounds.
Shooting Unfolds in Residential Area
According to the Lauderhill Police Department, officers responded to a reported shooting around Northwest 43rd Terrace and Northwest 19th Street on Wednesday.
When officers arrived at the scene, they located one victim lying in the roadway of Northwest 43rd Terrace. A second victim was found in the back parking lot of the apartment complex, also suffering from gunshot wounds.
The victims were later identified by family members as 16-year-old Shiraj Reid and 17-year-old Marvin Travis. Both teens were transported to Broward Health Medical Center. Authorities say both are now in recovery and expected to survive.
Surveillance Video Leads to Break in the Case
During the investigation, detectives reviewed surveillance footage from the complex, which they say clearly captured Cranston moments before the shooting.
Video allegedly shows Cranston walking near the leasing office of the complex with what appears to be a gun tucked under his armpit. Moments later, he is seen turning a corner, drawing the weapon, and aiming it at a group of young people gathered in a nearby courtyard.
Police say the footage then shows Cranston walking toward the teens with his gun raised. As the group attempted to flee, Cranston allegedly opened fire, striking both victims.
Suspect Claims Self-Defense Tied to Prior Altercation
In a police interview following his arrest, Cranston reportedly told investigators that the shooting stemmed from a prior incident involving the same victims on June 1. He claimed that he feared for his life during that earlier encounter, though officials have not released further details about the alleged dispute.
Authorities say despite Cranston’s claim of self-defense, the evidence — including the surveillance video — led to his arrest. He was taken into custody and now faces multiple felony charges.
Community Reaction and Ongoing Investigation
The shooting, which took place in a typically quiet residential area, has left many local residents shaken. Community leaders are urging calm as police continue to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the attack.
