Tampa Bay Rays Hold Off Athletics 4-3 for Fifth Straight Win

Tampa Bay Extends AL East Lead With Another Strong Performance

The Tampa Bay Rays continued their push toward the postseason on Wednesday night, defeating the Athletics 4-3 for their fifth consecutive victory. The win improved the Rays to 92-59 and extended their lead in the American League East to 4½ games over the New York Yankees.

Tampa Bay, which secured a postseason berth last week as the first team in the majors to clinch, received another efficient start from Nick Martinez and timely production throughout the lineup.

Martinez Earns 15th Victory

Martinez worked five innings to earn his 15th win of the season, allowing five hits while striking out three. He needed only 72 pitches to complete his outing and improved to 15-4 on the season.

Martinez is now two victories behind Boston’s Sonny Gray for the American League wins lead. The Rays’ bullpen protected the lead after Martinez departed. Kevin Kelly delivered two scoreless innings while striking out four, Cam Booser tossed a scoreless eighth, and Cole Sulser closed out the game in the ninth for his third save.

Rays Strike Early

Tampa Bay jumped in front 2-0 in the first inning. Jonny DeLuca delivered a run-scoring double, and Chandler Simpson followed with another RBI double to give the Rays an early advantage.

DeLuca finished 2-for-4 with an RBI double as Tampa Bay’s offense collected timely hits against Athletics starter Brady Basso. The Rays added two more runs in the second inning, with Nick Fortes and Ryan Vilade each driving in a run to push the lead to 4-0.

Athletics Battle Back

The Athletics began chipping away in the third inning when Tommy White led off with a home run, sending a 347-foot drive into the left-field corner. Henry Bolte also homered in the inning, his 11th of the season, cutting Tampa Bay’s advantage to 4-2. Shea Langeliers added an RBI single in the sixth inning to make it a one-run game.

The hit also extended his career-best hitting streak to 12 games. White finished the night with three hits, but the Athletics could not produce another run against Tampa Bay’s bullpen. Basso took the loss, falling to 1-3 after allowing four runs on seven hits over 2⅔ innings.

Rays Look to Complete Sweep

The Rays will look to finish off a three-game sweep of the Athletics on Thursday. Jeffrey Springs, 4-13 with a 5.93 ERA, is scheduled to start for the Athletics, while Tampa Bay will counter with right-hander Drew Rasmussen, who enters at 14-5 with a 2.81 ERA.

With the regular season entering its final stretch, Tampa Bay’s latest victory keeps the Rays firmly in control of the AL East race while adding another win to an impressive September run.
