A difficult afternoon in the Bronx saw Orlando City SC suffer a heavy 5–0 defeat against New York City FC on Saturday at Yankee Stadium, as the Lions were forced to play most of the match with 10 men following an early red card.
Orlando found itself in immediate trouble in the 16th minute when goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau was shown a straight red card for handling the ball outside the penalty area. The dismissal left the Lions shorthanded for more than 70 minutes and opened the door for NYCFC to take control of the contest.
New York City wasted little time capitalizing on the numerical advantage. In the 22nd minute, Argentine winger Agustín Ojeda broke the deadlock, finishing a move set up by veteran playmaker Maxi Moralez and defender Kai Trewin to give the hosts a 1–0 lead.
The pressure continued to mount as NYCFC dictated possession and tempo. Just before halftime, striker Nicolás Fernández doubled the advantage in the 42nd minute, finishing a well-worked build-up involving Moralez and midfielder Aiden O’Neill.
Things worsened for Orlando deep into stoppage time of the first half. Moralez stepped up to the spot in the seventh minute of added time and calmly converted a penalty kick, sending the Lions into the locker room trailing 3–0.
NYCFC carried that momentum straight into the second half. Midfielder Keaton Parks made it 4–0 in the 49th minute, finishing a pass from defender Tayvon Gray. Parks struck again just five minutes later, completing his brace in the 54th minute to stretch the lead to 5–0 and effectively seal the result.
Despite Orlando’s efforts to regroup after the early dismissal, the combination of NYCFC’s attacking pressure and the Lions’ numerical disadvantage proved too much to overcome.
The loss leaves Orlando City still searching for its first points of the MLS season. The Lions will look to rebound next weekend when they return home to face CF Montréal at Inter&Co Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
