Terence Crawford Shocks Canelo Alvarez to Become Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion

Terence Crawford erased all doubts and etched his name deeper into boxing history Saturday night at Allegiant Stadium, putting on a masterful performance to defeat Canelo Alvarez by unanimous decision and claim the undisputed super middleweight championship.

The judges scored it 116-112, 115-113, and 115-113, but the fight felt more lopsided than the scorecards suggested. Crawford (42-0, 31 KOs), who turns 38 in two weeks, routinely stymied Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs) with sharp movement, pinpoint punching, and tactical brilliance that drew comparisons to Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s domination of the Mexican star back in 2013.

With the victory, Crawford became the first male boxer of the four-belt era to capture undisputed championships in three separate weight classes. He has now unified titles at junior welterweight, welterweight, and super middleweight — cementing his claim as one of the greatest fighters of all time.

Despite moving up from 154 pounds to 168 — a jump that many believed would be too much to overcome — Crawford looked comfortable against Alvarez, who entered the fight unbeaten in 10 bouts at super middleweight. Crawford outlanded Canelo 115-99 in total punches and controlled the jab battle 45-16.

The defining moment came in the 11th round when a simple jab snapped Alvarez’s head back and left him shaking it in frustration. It symbolized a night in which the Mexican superstar, long considered one of boxing’s most powerful and versatile fighters, couldn’t find answers against Crawford’s adjustments.

“I’m a winner for being here,” Alvarez said after the fight, acknowledging the challenge but insisting he still holds his head high.

From the opening bell, Crawford used his footwork to keep Alvarez from cutting off the ring. Whenever Canelo tried to press forward with body work, Crawford responded with combinations upstairs before slipping away. By Round 7, Crawford even chose to stand in the pocket and trade punches, further frustrating Alvarez and showing he could win every kind of fight.

The announced crowd of 70,482 — overwhelmingly in Alvarez’s corner — watched as the Mexican hero grew more desperate in the late rounds while Crawford continued to pile up points with clean, efficient shots. By the championship rounds, Crawford was beating Alvarez to the punch in every exchange.

Crawford’s move up to dethrone Alvarez recalls his stunning demolition of Errol Spence Jr. in 2023 to unify the welterweight division. While less violent, his victory over Alvarez was equally significant. Few gave him a realistic chance to topple the bigger, stronger champion. Instead, Crawford flipped the script and delivered a career-defining masterpiece.

Many fans booed as the decision was read, but those jeers quickly gave way to applause as the crowd acknowledged Crawford’s brilliance.

“I just went out there and showed my skills,” Crawford said. “This is what greatness looks like.”

For Alvarez, the loss is just his second in the last decade, with the other coming against Dmitry Bivol in 2022 at light heavyweight. For Crawford, the future is uncertain. Having conquered yet another division, the Omaha native may choose to retire on top — or continue to chase legacy-defining challenges.

If this was the last time Terence Crawford laced up the gloves, his résumé demands a place among the sport’s all-time greats. Undefeated, undisputed in three weight classes, and fearless in the face of impossible odds, Crawford has redefined what it means to be a champion.
