Texas Man Caught With 30 Kilos of Cocaine

Joint Operation in Columbia County Intercepts $4.5 Million Worth of Cocaine

Columbia County, FL — In a significant blow to drug trafficking operations, a joint effort between deputies in Columbia County, Florida, and Lowndes County, Georgia, led to the interception of 30 kilograms of cocaine, valued at approximately $4.5 million. The operation culminated in the arrest of Hector Villarreal, 37, from Pasadena, Texas, who now faces severe trafficking charges.

Traffic Stop Leads to Major Seizure

The drugs were discovered during a traffic stop on Interstate 75 in Lake City, near the Interstate 10 exchange. Villarreal was initially pulled over for failing to maintain his lane. However, deputies quickly noticed several suspicious behaviors that raised red flags.

Suspicious Behavior and Initial Investigations

During a news conference, Florida Middle District U.S. Attorney Roger Handberg detailed the deputies’ observations. “They observed that his hands were visibly trembling, and his chest was moving up and down so rapidly that a deputy asked if he was having a medical emergency. He was not,” Handberg explained.

Further suspicion arose when Villarreal could not remember who he was renting his SUV from and mentioned that he was only planning a brief stay in Hains City, despite the lengthy drive from Texas.

Discovery of Cocaine

Upon consenting to a vehicle search, deputies found three large, heavy Home Depot cardboard boxes taped shut and emitting a strong smell of Lysol. A can of Lysol was also found under the passenger seat, a common method used to mask the scent of drugs. Despite this, a drug detection K9 quickly located the hidden cocaine.

Significance of the Seizure

Columbia County Sheriff Mark Hunter highlighted the importance of this interception. “Cocaine kills people. This is thousands of dosage units that were intercepted before they could be broken up and distributed,” Handberg stated.

Besides preventing potential overdose deaths, the seizure is expected to reduce gun violence. “That is a valuable product. That is something individuals are going to want to protect, and we have seen it in our cases. Armed drug trafficking is a top priority,” Handberg added.

Villarreal’s Legal Troubles

Hector Villarreal was already on federal probation for an illegal narcotics conviction in Texas. His current charges could result in decades of imprisonment if convicted. He is currently held on a $10 million bond.

Community Impact

This operation underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat drug trafficking and protect communities from the associated violence and health risks. The collaboration between the counties of Columbia and Lowndes serves as a testament to the effectiveness of joint operations in tackling significant criminal activities.

Authorities continue to urge the public to report any suspicious activities that may help in further reducing drug trafficking and ensuring community safety.
