A third ransom-style message has surfaced in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, escalating an already volatile investigation with a fresh demand for cryptocurrency in exchange for alleged information about the suspect.

According to reporting from TMZ, the latest note demands one Bitcoin, currently valued at roughly $67,000 in exchange for “the name of the individual involved.” The message reportedly included an active Bitcoin wallet address and the warning: “Time is more than relevant.”

TMZ host Harvey Levin said the outlet confirmed the wallet address is active and has forwarded the letter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Authorities have not publicly confirmed the authenticity of the note.

Pattern of Extortion Attempts

This marks the third alleged ransom communication since Nancy Guthrie, 84, vanished from her Tucson home on the night of January 31.

An earlier note, also reportedly sent to media outlets, included a separate Bitcoin address. Law enforcement has not confirmed whether any of the notes are connected to each other or to the individual seen on surveillance footage at the residence.

Investigators have previously stated they are not aware of any confirmed communication between the alleged kidnapper and the Guthrie family. The timing and structure of the messages raise the possibility of opportunistic hoaxes, a common complication in high-profile missing persons cases. However, officials have not ruled anything out.

Surveillance Footage and Armed Suspect

The FBI recently released images from a Nest doorbell camera showing a masked individual approaching Guthrie’s front door. The suspect appears to be wearing a ski mask, gloves, a jacket, and a backpack. A firearm is allegedly visible, holstered unusually at the front of the pants.

The FBI described the suspect as:

  • Male

  • Approximately 5’9” to 5’10”

  • Average build

  • Carrying a black 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack

Authorities are offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to Nancy Guthrie’s recovery or an arrest. Nancy is the mother of NBC “Today” anchor Savannah Guthrie and has lived in the Catalina Foothills area north of Tucson since 1975. She requires daily medication and has a pacemaker, intensifying concerns about her safety.

Law Enforcement Activity

On Tuesday evening, authorities briefly detained a FedEx delivery driver in Rio Rico, south of Tucson, after stopping a gray SUV. The individual was later released without charge after a search of his residence. He told reporters he was unaware of the case. Meanwhile, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department continues to process forensic evidence, including unidentified DNA recovered at the property and gloves located miles away. Officials have emphasized that they are not ruling out any individuals or possibilities.

What the Bitcoin Demand Could Mean

Cryptocurrency ransom demands have become increasingly common in both cybercrime and extortion attempts linked to missing persons cases. The use of Bitcoin complicates tracing but does not guarantee anonymity. Blockchain analysis tools routinely assist federal agencies in tracking wallet activity. At this stage, there is no confirmation that the ransom note sender has direct knowledge of Nancy Guthrie’s whereabouts. The demand could represent:

  • A legitimate communication from someone with inside knowledge

  • A coordinated extortion attempt

  • An opportunistic hoax exploiting media attention

Until verified, the note remains an allegation not evidence.

Where the Case Stands

Investigators now face three simultaneous threads:

  • Forensic analysis of unidentified DNA and physical evidence

  • Identification of the masked suspect captured on camera

  • Evaluation of multiple ransom communications demanding Bitcoin

Anyone with information is urged to contact 1-800-CALL-FBI or the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900.

This remains an active and evolving investigation.
