It wasn’t the medal the U.S. women’s 3×3 basketball team envisioned when they arrived in Paris, but it was a commendable finish nonetheless. The American squad, led by a tenacious Hailey Van Lith, secured the bronze medal with a hard-fought 16-13 victory over Canada at La Concorde on Monday.
Hailey Van Lith spearheaded a balanced American attack, contributing six points and two assists. Her efforts were complemented by a robust defensive performance that ultimately sealed the win for Team USA.

Coming off a heart-wrenching overtime loss to Spain in the semifinals, the U.S. team initially struggled against Canada. They trailed 7-3 early and were down 12-9 with just three minutes remaining. However, a remarkable 6-1 run in the closing moments turned the tide in favor of the Americans. This decisive run included crucial points from Van Lith, Dearica Hamby, and two free throws from Cierra Burdick that iced the game in the final seconds.
The U.S. team’s defensive strategy proved pivotal in their victory. They managed to stifle Canada’s offense, particularly from beyond the arc, holding them to a mere 3-of-14 shooting. Canadian star Michelle Plouffe was limited to just 1-of-6 from three-point range.

Moreover, Team USA’s discipline and efficiency at the free-throw line provided a critical edge. They enjoyed a 7-0 advantage in free throw attempts, a stark contrast to their semifinal performance against Spain, where free throws had been their Achilles’ heel.
The bronze medal finish capped a tumultuous tournament for the U.S. women. They began with a shocking 0-3 start in pool play, but soon found their rhythm. The team surged through the remaining pool games and decisively defeated China in the play-in game to secure a spot in the semifinals.
Van Lith’s development as a facilitator was a significant highlight, while Rhyne Howard’s recovery from injuries over the summer added a much-needed boost. The team appeared poised to achieve their gold-medal aspirations until a few unfortunate breaks against Spain curtailed their quest.
While the bronze is a testament to their resilience and determination, the U.S. team can’t help but wonder what might have been had their journey not been marred by early setbacks and a semifinal heartbreaker.
As they reflect on their experience in Paris, the U.S. women’s 3×3 basketball team can take pride in their perseverance and the bronze medal they fought so valiantly to win.
