UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson Shot and Killed in Targeted Attack Outside New York Hotel
NEW YORK — Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot Wednesday morning in what police are calling a “brazen, targeted attack” outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel, where the health insurer had been hosting its annual investor conference. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, has shaken the city and led to an extensive manhunt for the shooter.
Thompson, 50, was walking alone from a nearby hotel to the Hilton when he was ambushed at approximately 6:45 a.m. Surveillance footage reveals the shooter lying in wait for several minutes before approaching Thompson from behind and opening fire. The shooter, believed to be a man dressed in a black face mask, light-colored jacket, and carrying a gray backpack, fired multiple shots at Thompson, striking him at least once in the back and once in the calf.
“The shooting does not appear to be a random act of violence,” said New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. “It was clearly a targeted attack.” Authorities have not yet established a motive for the crime, although Thompson’s wife, Paulette, mentioned to NBC News that her husband had reported being threatened by individuals, potentially related to insurance disputes. However, local law enforcement in Thompson’s suburban Minneapolis home said they had not received reports of threats.
The shooter was seen fleeing the scene on foot, then using an e-bike to travel into Central Park. The e-bike, which was identified as part of the city’s CitiBike program, was later recovered, but the suspect remains at large. A search operation, including drones, helicopters, and police dogs, has been underway throughout the day.
“We are deeply saddened and shocked by the passing of Brian Thompson,” UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare, said in a statement. “Brian was a highly respected colleague and friend, and he will be greatly missed.” UnitedHealth also confirmed that the company’s annual investor meeting was abruptly ended in the wake of the tragedy.
Police are actively investigating the scene, collecting evidence including 9mm shell casings and a cellphone found in an alleyway where the shooter fled. Investigators are also searching Thompson’s hotel room, interviewing colleagues from UnitedHealthcare, and reviewing his social media accounts for any leads.
Thompson, who had been with UnitedHealth Group since 2004, had served as CEO for more than three years. His leadership was highly regarded, and his untimely death has left a significant void in the healthcare industry.
The shooting took place in a typically busy area of Manhattan, just blocks from major tourist attractions like the Museum of Modern Art and Rockefeller Center. The annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony was scheduled for the same evening, and while the city increased security in response to the incident, the event proceeded as planned.
“We’re encouraging New Yorkers to go about their daily lives, but to be alert,” said NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey.
As the investigation continues, authorities are offering a reward of up to $10,000 for any information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.
