USA’s Star-Studded Lineup Overpowers Brazil 15–5 in World Baseball Classic Opener

An All-Star lineup filled with Major League power hitters and a deep, reliable pitching staff gave World Baseball Classic fans sky-high expectations for Team USA entering the tournament. In their opening game, those expectations were largely met—even if the road to victory proved more competitive than many anticipated.

Team USA ultimately pulled away for a 15–5 win over Team Brazil, but the game remained within reach for Brazil for much of the night before a chaotic ninth inning blew it wide open.

Brazil’s pitchers showed flashes early but struggled with control throughout the contest, issuing 17 walks, including five in the ninth inning alone. Those free passes proved costly, turning a competitive matchup into a lopsided final score.

The fireworks began almost immediately. Just minutes into the game, Team USA captain Aaron Judge crushed a fastball from Brazilian starter Bo Takahashi over the wall for a two-run homer, igniting the crowd and hinting that a blowout could be on the horizon.

But Brazil refused to fade. On the second pitch of the game, Brazil leadoff hitter Lucas Ramirez—the son of 12-time MLB All-Star Manny Ramirez—sent a ball soaring over the fence against U.S. starter Logan Webb. The blast marked the 10th leadoff home run in World Baseball Classic history, and the first since Edouard Julien accomplished the feat for Canada in the 2023 tournament.

The pivotal moment came in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and tension building, Brice Turang lined a screaming double off the left-field wall, clearing the bases and giving Team USA a commanding six-run advantage. The hit showcased the depth of a U.S. lineup packed with All-Star talent from top to bottom.

Even then, Brazil continued to fight. Brazil actually outhomered the United States 3–1, thanks largely to the impressive performance of Lucas Ramirez.

His second homer of the night came in the eighth inning—a towering 354-foot shot to right field off reliever Gabe Speier—cutting the deficit to three runs and briefly raising the possibility of a dramatic comeback.

For a moment, the momentum seemed to be shifting. Any hope of a Brazilian rally disappeared in the ninth. Team USA plated seven runs in the inning despite collecting only three hits. The rest of the scoring came courtesy of Brazil’s control issues—walks, hit batters, and even a balk—as the inning spiraled out of control for the South American squad.

By the time the dust settled, the Americans had turned a tense game into a comfortable 15–5 victory.

With the result secured, Team USA manager Mark DeRosa shifted his focus from immediate strategy to the longer-term outlook of the tournament. Managing the bullpen carefully will be key as the Americans aim to keep their pitching staff fresh for the demanding schedule ahead.

If the opener proved anything, it’s that Team USA’s lineup is every bit as dangerous as advertised. But Brazil’s offensive flashes—and the emergence of young slugger Lucas Ramirez—showed that even powerhouse rosters can be tested on baseball’s global stage.

For Team USA, the mission remains clear: turn star power into another World Baseball Classic championship.
