Vargas Grand Slam Powers White Sox Past Marlins 9–4 for First Win of Season

The Chicago White Sox broke into the win column in emphatic fashion Monday night, riding a career performance from Miguel Vargas to a 9–4 victory over the Miami Marlins. Vargas delivered a grand slam and a career-high six RBIs, helping Chicago seize early control and never look back.

Batting in the leadoff spot, Vargas set the tone in the third inning when he lined an RBI single to bring home Everson Pereira and open the scoring. Moments later, Austin Hays blasted a three-run homer to right field, quickly stretching the lead to 4–0 and energizing the White Sox dugout.

Chicago’s offense kept rolling in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Vargas delivered the biggest swing of the night—a towering grand slam that pushed the White Sox ahead 8–0 and effectively put the game out of reach early. He later added a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to score Luisangel Acuña, capping his six-RBI performance.

The White Sox lineup continued to contribute throughout the night. Pereira and Tristan Peters each collected two hits, while Munetaka Murakami went 1-for-5 with a single, snapping his three-game home run streak.

On the mound, Davis Martin (1–0) delivered a steady outing in his first win of the season. The right-hander allowed three runs on five hits over five innings, striking out six and walking two. Chicago’s bullpen backed him up effectively, with Sean Newcomb striking out five over 2⅔ innings of relief before Jordan Hicks recorded the final four outs for his first save with the club.

Miami showed flashes of life offensively, led by Liam Hicks, who accounted for three RBIs. Hicks put the Marlins on the board with a two-run homer in the fourth inning and later added an RBI single in the eighth. Jakob Marsee also contributed with a run-scoring single in the fifth.

Marlins starter Chris Paddack (0–1) struggled against Chicago’s aggressive approach. He allowed eight runs on eight hits over four innings, striking out six without issuing a walk but taking the loss as Miami dropped to 3–1 on the season.

With momentum finally on their side, the White Sox will look to secure another victory Tuesday night when right-hander Erick Fedde (4–13, 5.49 ERA) takes the mound in the middle game of the series against Miami’s Janson Junk (6–4, 4.17 ERA). Chicago hopes Vargas’ breakout performance marks the beginning of a turnaround after a slow start to the year.
