Racist Outburst Interrupts Laguna Beach Proposal
A romantic marriage proposal at a scenic Laguna Beach park turned into a disturbing confrontation after a woman interrupted the celebration and allegedly told the couple and their family to “go back to Mexico.”
Emmanuel Banuelos had spent weeks planning a surprise proposal for his girlfriend, Hayley Lugo, at Crescent Bay Point Park in Laguna Beach, California. The setup included flowers, candles, an ocean view and a mariachi band playing music for the special occasion. Before the proposal, Hayley’s sister, Trinity Lugo, was preparing to record the moment when a woman walking her dog approached the group. The woman questioned whether the family had permission to use the park and said she had contacted police because of the setup.
The confrontation became increasingly hostile when the mariachi band began playing and Hayley approached the proposal area. Video recorded during the incident shows the woman using profanity and making comments about the group’s Mexican heritage before allegedly telling them to “go back to Mexico.” Trinity Lugo recorded the confrontation and later shared the video online. The footage quickly went viral, receiving millions of views and sparking widespread criticism of the woman’s behavior.
Hayley Lugo said the incident was especially upsetting because the proposal was supposed to be one of the happiest moments of her life. Despite the confrontation, Banuelos continued with his plan and proposed to Lugo. She said yes, allowing the couple to celebrate their engagement despite the interruption. The incident has also prompted conversations online about racism, discrimination and how public spaces are shared. While the woman reportedly questioned whether the group had permission for its setup, the confrontation escalated beyond a disagreement over park rules and included comments directed at the family’s ethnicity.
The family said the video was shared to document what happened and bring attention to the treatment they experienced during what was supposed to be a special family celebration. For Banuelos and Lugo, the proposal ultimately went forward. The couple became engaged, but the viral confrontation became an unexpected part of a moment they had hoped would be remembered for very different reasons.
