The postseason has returned to the Alamo City, and Victor Wembanyama made sure the moment felt unforgettable. The 7-foot-4 phenom delivered a dazzling playoff debut with 35 points to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a commanding 111–98 win over the Portland Trail Blazers in Game 1 of their Western Conference first-round series Sunday night.
Wembanyama wasted little time announcing his presence on the playoff stage. He poured in 21 points in the first half, setting an NBA record for the most points in the opening half of a player’s playoff debut since the league’s play-by-play era began in 1997. His 35 total points also established a new Spurs franchise record for points in a playoff debut, surpassing the previous mark of 32 set by Tim Duncan in 1998.
The sellout crowd at the Frost Bank Center—including Spurs legends Tim Duncan and David Robinson seated courtside—roared throughout the night as San Antonio celebrated its first playoff appearance since 2019. After a six-season postseason drought following a remarkable stretch of 22 consecutive playoff appearances and five championships, the Spurs suddenly look like contenders again—and Wembanyama is the reason why.
San Antonio’s young core delivered strong support behind its rising superstar. Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox each scored 17 points and combined for 15 assists, helping the Spurs control the pace offensively and keep Portland’s defense under pressure all night.
Portland stayed competitive early thanks to Deni Avdija, who posted an impressive 30 points and 10 rebounds, while Scoot Henderson added 18 points. The Trail Blazers entered the series with momentum after their 114–110 play-in victory over Phoenix to secure the No. 7 seed, but they struggled to keep up with San Antonio’s defensive intensity.
The Spurs made their biggest statement on the defensive end. They limited Portland to just 10-of-38 shooting from three-point range and controlled the glass with a 45–38 rebounding advantage. A key third-quarter stretch helped San Antonio rebuild its double-digit lead, highlighted by Devin Vassell blocking shots from Donovan Clingan and Jrue Holiday before scoring eight straight points to swing momentum firmly back to the home side.
Wembanyama also delivered one of the night’s signature highlights midway through the first quarter. After dribbling behind his back to shake Avdija near midcourt, he backed him down toward the top of the key, spun past him, and finished with a powerful two-handed dunk that brought the arena to its feet. The sequence captured exactly why Spurs fans are dreaming big again.
Now a finalist for both the NBA’s Most Valuable Player and Defensive Player of the Year awards, Wembanyama is already proving he can dominate when the stakes are highest.
Game 2 of the series returns to San Antonio on Tuesday night before the matchup shifts to Portland for Games 3 and 4, where the Trail Blazers will try to regroup against a Spurs team that suddenly looks energized, confident—and dangerous.
