With Swollen Ankles and a Scandal Gaining Steam, Is Trump Too Weak to Stop the Epstein Story?

Trump Diagnosed with Chronic Venous Insufficiency Amid Speculation Over Bruises and Swollen Legs

Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) following visible swelling in his lower legs and bruising on the back of his hand, the White House confirmed Thursday. The announcement comes amid growing online speculation about the president’s physical condition, fueled by recent photographs showing discoloration and apparent inflammation.

Speaking from the James Brady Press Briefing Room, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the president experienced “mild swelling in his lower legs,” prompting a thorough medical evaluation by the White House medical unit.

“The president underwent a comprehensive examination including diagnostic vascular studies,” Leavitt said.

“Bilateral lower extremity intravenous Doppler ultrasounds were performed and revealed chronic venous insufficiency — a benign and common condition, particularly in individuals over the age of 70.”

The condition, while not life-threatening, is chronic and can lead to discomfort, swelling, and reduced mobility over time if untreated. It typically occurs when veins in the legs fail to pump blood effectively back to the heart, leading to pooling of blood and increased pressure in the lower extremities.

📸 Bruising Draws Public Attention

Speculation around Trump’s health intensified earlier this week after high-resolution press photos revealed deep purple bruising on the back of his right hand during an event with French President Emmanuel Macron. The president also appeared to walk with some stiffness and was photographed wearing what appeared to be extra-supportive footwear.

Leavitt attributed the hand bruising to “minor soft tissue irritation from frequent handshaking and the use of aspirin.” Trump, 79, has reportedly taken low-dose aspirin for years as a preventive measure against heart disease — a common practice for older adults.

“There is no discomfort from the president at all,” Leavitt assured reporters.

“And you probably all see that on a day-to-day basis — he’s working around the clock.”

🏥 Exam Results: No DVT, No Cardiac Issues

According to a medical memorandum released by Dr. Sean Barbabella, the president’s physician, Trump underwent multiple diagnostic tests following the symptoms. These included an echocardiogram, which showed normal cardiac function, and Doppler ultrasounds that ruled out deep vein thrombosis (DVT) — a potentially fatal complication associated with leg swelling.

“All test results were within normal limits,” Barbabella wrote in the July 17 memorandum, adding that the president’s overall vascular and cardiac health remain stable.

The White House also confirmed that Trump had undergone his annual physical at Walter Reed Medical Center in April 2025. That exam concluded that the president was “in excellent health.” The new findings, according to Leavitt, do not contradict that assessment, as CVI is a manageable condition common in seniors.

🧬 What Is Chronic Venous Insufficiency?

Chronic venous insufficiency affects an estimated 40% of people over age 60. While not usually dangerous on its own, it can cause pain, heaviness, swelling, and — in more severe cases — skin discoloration or venous ulcers. It’s often managed with lifestyle changes, compression stockings, leg elevation, and sometimes outpatient procedures like vein ablation.

Doctors say CVI is particularly common in patients with sedentary habits, prior leg trauma, or a family history of vein disorders. President Trump’s extensive travel and long-standing routines of prolonged standing at rallies and press events may have contributed to the issue.

📉 Political Implications

While the diagnosis is medically benign, it comes at a politically sensitive moment for Trump, whose campaign is navigating turbulence following new developments in the Jeffrey Epstein case and growing unrest within his MAGA base over transparency and leadership stamina.

Trump’s critics have questioned his physical and mental readiness to campaign through 2026, while supporters point to his busy travel schedule and frequent public appearances as evidence that he remains energized.

So far, no additional health concerns have been identified. Leavitt closed Thursday’s press conference reiterating that “the president remains in excellent health and is fully capable of executing the duties of his office.”
