Cooley’s Late Goal Lifts Mammoth Past Golden Knights 3–2, Series Even at 1–1

The Utah Mammoth earned a milestone playoff victory Tuesday night, edging the Vegas Golden Knights 3–2 in Game 2 of their Western Conference First Round series behind a clutch late goal from Logan Cooley. The win evens the best-of-seven series at one game apiece as the matchup shifts to Salt Lake City for Game 3 on Friday night.

Cooley, the 21-year-old Pittsburgh native, scored the decisive goal off a rebound with six minutes remaining in regulation, continuing his strong postseason debut. With the tally, he became the youngest U.S.-born player to score a goal in each of his first two career playoff games an impressive feat for a rising star who missed 28 games earlier this season with a lower-body injury.

Despite the setback, Cooley finished the regular season with 24 goals and 43 points in 54 games and entered the playoffs on a hot streak, recording seven goals and 13 points over his final 10 contests.

Tuesday’s victory marked the Mammoth’s first playoff win since the organization relocated from Arizona two years ago, adding extra significance to an already tightly contested series. The triumph also handed Vegas its first regulation loss under head coach John Tortorella, whose club had started 8-0-1 during his tenure behind the bench.

Dylan Guenther contributed a goal and an assist for Utah, while MacKenzie Weegar added a goal and Kailer Yamamoto chipped in two assists. Goaltender Karel Vejmelka turned aside 19 shots to secure the victory.

For Vegas, Mark Stone and Ivan Barbashev scored, with Jack Eichel assisting on both goals. Netminder Carter Hart made 26 saves but absorbed his first loss with the Golden Knights after winning his first seven starts under Tortorella.

Vegas opened the scoring in the first period when Stone’s shot deflected off Utah defenseman Mikhail Sergachev’s skate and into the net. However, the Golden Knights were again undone by misfortune shortly afterward. A puck caromed off the stick of Noah Hanifin and the shin of Rasmus Andersson before sliding into their own net, with Weegar credited for the equalizer.

The second period featured another quick exchange of goals. Guenther fired a shot from the left point to give Utah the lead, but Barbashev responded just 1:02 later, weaving through traffic in the slot and finishing with a backhand to tie the game at 2–2.

With the game still tied late in regulation, Guenther generated the breakthrough sequence. Racing in on the rush, he fired a shot that rang off the post, then chased down his own rebound. The puck bounced into the crease, where Cooley was waiting to tap it home for the go-ahead goal.

The Mammoth held firm defensively the rest of the way to secure the win and seize momentum heading into Game 3 back home in Salt Lake City. With the series now even, both teams face a pivotal swing game as the intensity of this Western Conference matchup continues to build.
