Downtown Dallas Neiman Marcus Closes After 112 Years On Main Street

Downtown Dallas Neiman Marcus Closes

After 112 years on Main Street, the iconic downtown Dallas Neiman Marcus has officially closed its doors, ending one of the most recognizable chapters in the city’s retail history. The historic store at 1618 Main Street closed on September 30, 2026. The location had been a fixture in downtown Dallas since 1914 and became closely associated with the city’s luxury retail scene, fashion industry and social culture.

How Neiman Marcus Became A Dallas Institution

Neiman Marcus was founded in Dallas in 1907 by Herbert Marcus Sr., his sister Carrie Marcus Neiman and her husband, Al Neiman. After the company’s original downtown store was destroyed by fire in 1913, the retailer rebuilt at the Main Street location. The new store opened in 1914 and eventually became the company’s iconic downtown flagship. For generations of Dallas residents, shopping at Neiman Marcus was about more than buying clothes. The store became a destination for designer fashion, jewelry, special events, holiday traditions and dining.

The Famous Zodiac Room

One of the most recognizable parts of the downtown store was the Zodiac Room. The restaurant opened in 1953 and became closely connected to the Neiman Marcus experience. Customers could shop for luxury goods and then sit down for lunch, making the store a destination for both retail and dining. Neiman Marcus plans to preserve the Zodiac Room name in Dallas by transforming the café at its NorthPark Center location into a new version of the restaurant.

Why The Downtown Store Closed

The closure comes as shopping habits have changed significantly. More customers now shop online, while luxury shoppers increasingly visit large shopping centers where multiple retailers, restaurants and entertainment options are located in one destination. Neiman Marcus has also said that its Dallas customers increasingly shop at the company’s NorthPark Center location. The downtown store also faced the challenges affecting many traditional department stores, including changing consumer behavior and the decline of downtown retail districts in major American cities.

What Happens To Neiman Marcus In Dallas?

The closure does not mean Neiman Marcus is leaving Dallas. The company will continue operating its NorthPark Center location, which will become the primary Neiman Marcus destination for Dallas shoppers. The NorthPark location will also receive elements of the downtown store’s legacy, including the reimagined Zodiac Room.

A Major Change For Downtown Dallas

The closing represents a major change for downtown Dallas because Neiman Marcus remained one of the area’s most recognizable longtime retailers. Downtown Dallas was once filled with major department stores and shopping destinations. Over the years, many of those businesses disappeared as shopping moved toward suburban centers, enclosed malls and newer retail developments. Neiman Marcus survived those changes and remained on Main Street for more than a century. That makes the closure especially significant. The store was not simply another business occupying downtown space. It was a physical connection to an earlier version of Dallas.

112 Years Of History

During its time on Main Street, Neiman Marcus witnessed enormous changes in Dallas. The city transformed from a growing regional commercial center into a major corporate and financial hub. Fashion changed dramatically, downtown neighborhoods evolved and the way Americans shopped was completely transformed. Through all of those changes, the Neiman Marcus building remained a familiar presence. Now, after 112 years, that chapter has come to an end.

Neiman Marcus Remains Part Of Dallas

Although the downtown flagship is gone, Neiman Marcus remains deeply connected to Dallas. The company was founded in the city and continues to operate a major location at NorthPark Center. The retailer’s decision to move elements of the downtown experience to NorthPark allows the company to maintain some of its Dallas traditions while adapting to where customers are shopping today. For longtime Dallas residents, however, the closing of the Main Street store marks the loss of something that cannot simply be relocated. The building at 1618 Main Street was part of Dallas for more than a century. From its opening in 1914 to its final day in 2026, Neiman Marcus helped shape the city’s reputation for fashion, luxury and retail. The name will remain in Dallas, but the iconic downtown flagship is now officially part of the city’s history.
