Ducks Defense Dominates as Oregon Blanks Texas Tech 23-0 to Reach CFP Semifinal

The No. 5 Ducks delivered a dominant, defense-driven performance Thursday night, blanking No. 4 Texas Tech 23-0 in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal Orange Bowl. Behind a relentless pass rush and a turnover-hungry secondary, Oregon silenced one of the nation’s most explosive offenses and punched its ticket to the CFP semifinals.

Matayo Uiagalelei set the tone with a game-changing play early in the second half, stripping Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton deep in Red Raider territory. Uiagalelei rumbled into the red zone, and one play later Jordon Davison powered in for a touchdown to give Oregon a 13-0 lead. From there, the Ducks never let up.

Freshman Brandon Finney Jr. was everywhere, finishing with three takeaways — two interceptions and a fumble recovery — as Oregon smothered a Texas Tech offense that entered the game averaging 42.5 points and 480.3 yards per contest. Instead, the Red Raiders managed neither points nor momentum.

Oregon quarterback Moore was steady and efficient, throwing for 234 yards, while Davison scored twice on the ground. Atticus Sappington added three field goals as the Ducks (13-1) steadily pulled away, capping the night with Davison’s 1-yard plunge with 16 seconds remaining.

Texas Tech (12-2) simply could not get out of its own way. The Red Raiders turned the ball over four times, were stopped on fourth down three times and endured four three-and-outs. Morton finished 18 of 32 for just 137 yards and was under constant pressure. After Uiagalelei’s strip-sack, Morton later threw a red-zone interception early in the fourth quarter, and a failed fourth-down attempt from Tech’s own 30 midway through the quarter erased any remaining comeback hopes.

The shutout was historic for Oregon. It marked the Ducks’ first shutout of an AP-ranked opponent since 2012 and the first time in 113 games against top-10 teams that Oregon held an opponent scoreless. It was also a stark contrast from the Ducks’ first-round win over James Madison, a 51-34 victory that left Oregon dissatisfied with its defensive performance.

This quarterfinal result continued a growing trend in the 12-team CFP format. Thursday’s game was the sixth quarterfinal since the expanded playoff began last year — and the sixth time a team coming off a first-round bye lost to a team that played in the opening round. Texas Tech became the latest casualty, joining Boise State, Arizona State, Georgia, Oregon (in 2024) and Ohio State, which fell to Miami on Wednesday night. In those six games, teams with byes have held the lead for less than five combined minutes of regulation.

Texas Tech hoped to buck that trend. It could not.

Oregon, which tied a school record for wins in a season, now advances to the Peach Bowl CFP semifinal on Jan. 9, where it will face either No. 1 Indiana or No. 9 Alabama. The winner of that game will return to Miami Gardens for the national championship on Jan. 19.

For the Ducks, the formula is clear: defense first, everything else follows. For Texas Tech, a dream season ended abruptly, though the Red Raiders will look ahead to opening the 2026 season at home against Abilene Christian on Sept. 5.
