EMS Worker Reveals Haunting Details After 16 Children Were Found Living in Ohio House of Horror

Four Family Members Plead Not Guilty as New Details Reveal 16 Ohio Children Lived in Conditions Investigators Say Were “Worse Than Livestock”

HAMDEN, Ohio — Disturbing new details continue to emerge in one of the most shocking child abuse investigations in recent Ohio history, as four members of the same family have pleaded not guilty to dozens of felony child endangerment charges after authorities allegedly discovered 16 children confined for years inside a filthy rural home.

Investigators now say the children endured conditions so horrific that even seasoned first responders were left shaken, describing the home as “worse than how livestock are kept.”

The investigation began on June 30 when authorities executed a search warrant at a residence on Ohmer Street in Hamden, Ohio. The warrant was unrelated to child welfare, and officials had no indication children were living inside the home. Neighbors later told investigators they had never seen children playing outside or even looking through the home’s windows.

Instead, officers uncovered what prosecutors describe as years of systematic neglect.

Children Allegedly Confined to a Single Room

According to investigators, the children, ranging in age from just 18 months to 18 years old, spent much of the past four years confined inside a single 12 foot by 12 foot room. Authorities said the residence was coated in human waste and overwhelmed by insects, creating hazardous living conditions unlike anything many investigators had encountered during their careers.

Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson said the odor inside the home was so overwhelming that nearly a day after leaving the residence, he still could not get the smell off his body. A local firefighter and EMS driver who responded to the scene echoed those descriptions during an interview, saying the smell immediately clung to responders’ clothing and required them to change clothes after leaving the residence.

The first responder also described a severe cockroach infestation, saying insects crawled across the children continuously, leaving many covered with bug bites and scratches from trying to relieve the constant irritation.

Children Reportedly Showed Severe Developmental Delays

Authorities say years of isolation left many of the children unable to communicate normally. Investigators described several of the children as behaving “almost like feral animals” after having little or no contact with the outside world.

One of the most heartbreaking revelations involved an 18 year old with developmental disabilities who reportedly could not write or even spell her own name. Officials also said none of the children had ever attended school. According to investigators, the family frequently moved between counties throughout southern Ohio over the past two decades, allegedly avoiding the creation of school, medical, dental, and other public records that might have alerted authorities.

First Responder Describes “Haunting Silence”

One of the most emotional accounts came from an EMS driver who transported four elementary aged children from the home. He recalled climbing into the ambulance and being struck by what he described as an eerie silence.

Instead of crying, asking questions, or reacting to the emergency vehicles around them, the children reportedly sat with blank expressions throughout the ride. The responder said they appeared too frightened, and too unfamiliar with the outside world, to understand what was happening.

Several Children Required Emergency Hospitalization

All 16 children were immediately removed from the residence and placed into emergency protective custody through the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. Seven children were hospitalized in Columbus, while two required emergency helicopter transport to Level I trauma centers because of the seriousness of their medical conditions. As of early July, authorities said one child remained intubated in critical condition.

Four Family Members Face Dozens of Felony Charges

The following four family members have each pleaded not guilty:

  • Gary Siders Jr.
  • Elizabeth Siders
  • Gary Siders Sr.
  • Christina Siders

Each defendant faces 17 counts of second degree felony child endangerment and is being held on $300,000 bond.

Vinton County Prosecuting Attorney William Archer said prosecutors pursued the high-level felony charges because investigators believe the alleged abuse and neglect caused prolonged and severe physical harm to the children.

Authorities emphasized there is currently no evidence indicating the children were victims of human trafficking. Instead, investigators say the case appears to involve extreme, multi-generational familial abuse and neglect carried out over many years.

Gary Siders Jr. also faces a separate pretrial hearing in an unrelated indecency case.

Investigation Continues

Investigators continue examining how the family remained hidden from government agencies for so many years without school enrollment, routine medical care, or other records that might have triggered intervention.

Meanwhile, child welfare officials are working to stabilize the 16 children, who now face what experts say will likely be years of intensive medical treatment, education, and psychological rehabilitation after spending much of their lives isolated from the outside world.
