FDA False Positive Lettuce Test

A major development in the nationwide Cyclospora outbreak investigation has raised new questions about the source of the illnesses after federal health officials announced that a lettuce sample initially believed to contain the parasite actually produced a false positive test result.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said it has determined that a laboratory sample of iceberg lettuce linked to Taylor Farms did not test positive for Cyclospora after additional scientific review. While the finding removes what appeared to be the strongest laboratory evidence connecting the company to the outbreak, investigators say the overall investigation remains active and Taylor Farms has not been ruled out as a possible source.

FDA Revises Earlier Findings

The FDA explained that the original laboratory analysis suggested Cyclospora DNA had been detected in a lettuce sample. However, after further review by agency scientists, officials concluded that the signal did not represent a true positive result.

Detecting Cyclospora in food has long been one of the biggest challenges facing public health investigators. Unlike bacteria such as Salmonella or E. coli, Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that is notoriously difficult to identify in fresh produce because it is often present in extremely low numbers and can be unevenly distributed throughout a shipment.

As a result, health officials rely not only on laboratory testing but also on epidemiological evidence and supply chain investigations to determine the likely source of an outbreak.

Traceback Investigation Still Points to Iceberg Lettuce

Although the laboratory result has been withdrawn, the FDA says its traceback investigation continues to identify shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell restaurants as the most likely vehicle responsible for the outbreak.

Investigators traced the lettuce supplied to multiple Taco Bell locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia back through the distribution chain. Those restaurants shared a common supplier, Taylor Farms de Mexico, making the company a central focus of the investigation even without a confirmed positive laboratory sample.

Health officials stressed that traceback investigations often provide some of the strongest evidence during foodborne illness investigations because they identify common supply chains among large numbers of unrelated patients.

Recall Remains in Effect

The FDA said the false positive does not change its current consumer recommendations.

Taylor Farms previously initiated a voluntary recall of iceberg lettuce products imported from central Mexico after the company was notified of the investigation. The recalled products include shredded lettuce distributed to restaurants as well as several retail products sold under private-label brands.

Federal officials continue advising consumers to avoid eating recalled lettuce products and recommend that restaurants and retailers immediately remove any affected items from sale or service.

Thousands of Illnesses Under Investigation

The Cyclospora outbreak remains one of the largest foodborne illness investigations of the year.

According to federal officials, more than 1,600 confirmed illnesses connected to exposures at Taco Bell restaurants have been identified across five states, with dozens of patients requiring hospitalization. Investigators are also examining additional illnesses reported in other parts of the country to determine whether they are connected to the same contamination event.

Cyclospora infections typically develop about one week after a person consumes contaminated food or water. Symptoms often include persistent watery diarrhea, severe stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, bloating, and occasional low-grade fever. Without treatment, symptoms can continue for several weeks and may return after temporarily improving.

Why the False Positive Matters

False positive laboratory results are uncommon but can occur during highly sensitive molecular testing, particularly when scientists are searching for organisms that exist in extremely small quantities. While disappointing for investigators, the revised finding underscores how complex foodborne illness investigations can be.

Public health agencies frequently combine patient interviews, laboratory science, environmental inspections, and product traceback investigations before determining the most likely source of an outbreak. In many Cyclospora outbreaks, investigators never recover the parasite from the food itself because contaminated products have already been consumed or discarded by the time illnesses are reported.

Investigation Continues

The FDA says it will continue collecting product samples, reviewing supply chain records, and working alongside the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state health departments to determine exactly where the contamination occurred.

For now, officials emphasize that no food product has been definitively confirmed to contain Cyclospora, but the epidemiological evidence continues to point toward shredded iceberg lettuce distributed through the affected supply chain. Consumers are encouraged to follow all existing recall notices and discard any recalled products while investigators work to identify the outbreak’s definitive source.
