Gaethje Claims Interim Gold in Five-Round War at UFC 324

Justin Gaethje’s reputation as must-see violence somehow found another level Saturday night.

Nicknamed “The Highlight” for a reason, Gaethje added another iconic chapter to his career by winning the UFC’s interim lightweight championship with a unanimous decision victory over Paddy Pimblett in the main event of UFC 324 at T-Mobile Arena. The judges scored the action-packed bout 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47, reflecting a fight that was competitive but consistently tilted by Gaethje’s power and pressure.

Gaethje (27-5) knocked Pimblett down multiple times across several rounds, doing his best work whenever he trapped the Brit along the fence. In the opening round, a sharp right uppercut sent Pimblett to the canvas, setting the tone for the night. The damage continued in the second round, when Gaethje dropped Pimblett again with a right hand and finished the frame on top, unloading elbows and forearms that left Pimblett bloodied over his right eye. Despite the punishment, Pimblett showed respect after the horn, even fist-bumping Gaethje in acknowledgment.

At 37, Gaethje entered the bout as a +195 underdog at DraftKings Sportsbook, a familiar role for one of the most dangerous men in the division. The win improved him to 9-2 in his UFC career as an underdog and earned him the interim lightweight title for the second time, following his 2020 decision victory over Tony Ferguson.

The result also handed Pimblett (23-4) his first UFC loss. The 31-year-old had been a perfect 7-0 inside the Octagon prior to Saturday and stayed true to his prefight promise to stand and trade with Gaethje for all five rounds. While Pimblett had moments of success and several momentum swings kept the fight compelling, Gaethje’s power, durability and veteran composure ultimately proved decisive.

After the fight, Pimblett credited Gaethje for the win, echoing sentiments he had expressed during the buildup, when he openly admitted he was a fan of the former interim champion.

For Gaethje, the victory sets up a massive 155-pound unification bout with undisputed lightweight champion Ilia Topuria, a showdown that could take place as soon as June — perhaps on one of the sport’s most unique stages yet, the White House.

Gaethje’s first interim title run ended in a submission loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 254 in what became Nurmagomedov’s final fight. This time around, Gaethje looks determined to turn interim gold into undisputed glory.

Win or lose, Gaethje has long been defined by how he fights. On Saturday night in Las Vegas, he reminded everyone why he remains one of the most beloved and feared competitors in UFC history — and why, even deep into his career, betting against “The Highlight” can still be a dangerous move.
