2026 Belmont Stakes Preview: Can Chief Wallabee Deliver in a Wide-Open Finale?

The Triple Crown season has been defined by parity in recent years, and the 2026 Belmont Stakes arrives with another intriguing cast of contenders looking to make their mark. Twenty-three different horses have captured the last 24 Triple Crown races, with Sovereignty standing alone as the only horse since 2019 to win two Triple Crown events.

This year, Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo enters Belmont Park seeking to add a second jewel to his résumé, but unlike past Triple Crown champions, he faces a field loaded with familiar rivals eager for redemption. Several of the top finishers from Churchill Downs return for another showdown, creating one of the deepest Belmont Stakes fields in recent memory.

Chief Wallabee the Bill Mott’s talented colt remains the horse to beat. Chief Wallabee was a top choice heading into the Kentucky Derby and did little to diminish that opinion despite finishing fourth. The son of Constitution endured significant traffic trouble in the stretch yet still managed a respectable effort behind Golden Tempo.

While still displaying some immaturity and quirks, Chief Wallabee continues to show immense upside. His tactical speed could prove to be the decisive factor in a Belmont Stakes that lacks established front-runners. Unlike many of his main rivals, he does not need to come from far back and should secure an ideal stalking position just behind the pace.

Making his second start with blinkers, Chief Wallabee appears poised to deliver the complete performance many have been waiting to see.

Renegade the Arkansas Derby winner may be the most dependable horse in the field. Renegade encountered trouble leaving the gate from the rail in the Kentucky Derby but still finished with determination. His form entering Churchill Downs was among the strongest of any three-year-old in the country, and his combination of stamina and class makes him a major threat.

The concern is race shape. Renegade’s devastating late kick is most effective when there’s a strong pace to chase, and this year’s Belmont appears light on early speed. If the pace is slow, he could find himself with too much ground to make up in the final quarter-mile.

Still, his consistency makes him a must-use contender.

Commandment who is Brad Cox’s Florida Derby winner may be sitting on a rebound effort. Commandment entered the Kentucky Derby riding a four-race winning streak before encountering traffic and failing to secure a clear run. The colt’s gritty Florida Derby victory remains one of the strongest prep performances of the season.

His grinding style would likely be even more effective over the Belmont’s traditional mile-and-a-half distance, but he still figures to appreciate the stamina test. Drawing outside in a smaller field should allow him to avoid trouble and maintain momentum throughout the race.

If the Florida Derby effort did leave him slightly short for the Kentucky Derby, a freshened Commandment could be dangerous turning for home.

Powershift the wild card of the field may be the pace factor. Powershift enters with the least accomplished résumé among the major contenders, but his upside is undeniable. The Todd Pletcher trainee has been highly regarded since the beginning of his career and may find himself controlling the pace in a race lacking speed.

His disappointing Tampa Bay Derby effort is easy to forgive given the circumstances and track conditions. Following a breakthrough maiden victory, Powershift appears to be developing rapidly.

If allowed to dictate moderate fractions, he could prove difficult to reel in.

Golden Tempo the Kentucky Derby winner deserves respect but faces a different challenge. Golden Tempo’s stunning rally from the back of the field to win the Kentucky Derby was no fluke. The son of Curlin displayed a powerful closing kick while recording the biggest victory of his career.

His improvement coincided with the addition of blinkers, and many observers believe he was unlucky not to win the Louisiana Derby after losing momentum in deep stretch.

The concern lies in the projected pace scenario. Golden Tempo benefited from a much faster setup in Louisville than he is likely to receive in the Belmont. Without sufficient speed up front, his late charge may not be quite as effective against quality rivals.

Emerging Market the first of three Chad Brown runners remains an intriguing prospect. Emerging Market finished tenth in the Kentucky Derby, but context matters. He was attempting to accomplish something not seen since 1883 by winning the Derby in only his third career start.

Despite the disappointing result, he still owns a victory over Golden Tempo in the Louisiana Derby and possesses room for continued improvement.

A bounce-back performance would not be surprising.

Growth Equality an improving colt searching for a breakthrough. The son of Nyquist enters Belmont Park with a steadily improving form cycle and has responded positively as distances have increased.

However, questions remain regarding the quality of competition he has faced. His recent victories came against relatively modest opposition, and the Belmont Stakes represents a significant class test.

While talented, he may still be a notch below the division’s elite.

Vitruvian Man the longest shot in the field offers some appeal underneath. Vitruvian Man endured a difficult trip in the Santa Anita Derby after being shuffled to the rear of the field. Despite the adversity, he rallied for third and appeared to relish every additional yard of distance.

His stamina should serve him well in the Belmont, but his inability to seriously threaten the top finishers in California raises concerns against this level of competition.

A minor award appears to be his ceiling.

Ottinho a major upset would be required. Ottinho finished second in the Blue Grass Stakes but has been thoroughly defeated in each of his last two starts, losing by double-digit margins.

Blinkers helped produce a stronger speed figure in his most recent outing, yet another significant leap forward would be necessary to contend with this group.

At this stage, he appears overmatched.

With no dominant superstar in the division and a pace scenario that could dramatically shape the outcome, the 2026 Belmont Stakes appears ripe for a tactical runner. Chief Wallabee’s combination of talent, versatility, and projected trip gives him the edge in what should be a highly competitive conclusion to this year’s Triple Crown season.
