Gibbs Shines Under the Lights as Lions Top Buccaneers 24-9 on Monday Night Football

Jahmyr Gibbs delivered a breakout performance on the national stage Monday night, accounting for a career-high 218 yards of offense and two touchdowns to power the Detroit Lions to a 24-9 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The third-year running back was unstoppable, scoring on a 78-yard sprint late in the second quarter and adding a 5-yard spinning touchdown run in the third. Gibbs finished with 136 yards rushing on 17 carries and 82 yards receiving on three catches, becoming the first NFL player since Chris Johnson in 2009 to record at least 135 rushing yards, 80 receiving yards, and two rushing scores in a game.

The win pushed Detroit to 5-2, allowing them to bounce back immediately from a loss — something they’ve done flawlessly for nearly three years. The Lions extended their NFL-long streak of 51 consecutive regular-season games without losing two straight, a testament to head coach Dan Campbell’s culture of resilience.

Detroit’s offense struck first as Jared Goff connected with Amon-Ra St. Brown for a 27-yard touchdown on the opening drive. Despite outgaining Tampa Bay by more than 200 yards in the first half, the Lions led only 14-3 at intermission after squandering several chances with a fumble, an interception, a turnover on downs, and a missed field goal.

Gibbs’ 78-yard touchdown run — the longest of his young career — provided the Lions with their first big spark. After cutting back through a wide-open lane, he outran the entire Buccaneers defense to make it 14-0 midway through the second quarter.

Tampa Bay (5-2) briefly gained momentum when rookie Tez Johnson hauled in a 22-yard touchdown reception to open the second half, narrowing the deficit to 14-9. But Gibbs once again took over, ripping off a 15-yard run and 28-yard catch on the ensuing drive to set up his second touchdown, extending Detroit’s lead to 21-9 late in the third.

Goff went 20-of-29 for 241 yards with one touchdown, though he also committed three turnovers in Buccaneers territory. Still, his poise and Detroit’s defensive pressure prevented any serious Tampa Bay rally.

Baker Mayfield completed 28 of 50 passes for 228 yards with one touchdown and one interception. His final chance to spark a comeback fell short when he overthrew a receiver in the end zone with 4:24 remaining.

Rookie kicker Jake Bates capped the scoring with a 58-yard field goal that banked in off the upright early in the fourth quarter, giving Detroit a 24-9 cushion.

With the win, the Lions improved to 13-3 in night games under Campbell and have now won five straight Monday Night Football contests.

“Jahmyr was unbelievable tonight,” Campbell said postgame. “He ran with vision, patience, and speed — that’s what we drafted him for. He gave us everything we needed.”
