Ginton Reimagines “Kalabancoro” With African Legends Richard Bona and Salif Keita in a Soulful Global Collaboration
Amsterdam-based producer, DJ, and guitarist Ginton steps into the global spotlight with a stunning rework of the 2003 classic “Kalabancoro”—teaming up with GRAMMY-winning African jazz-fusion virtuoso Richard Bona and Afro-pop pioneer Salif Keita. Released via Decca Records / Universal Music, this emotionally rich collaboration bridges eras, cultures, and generations with a bold yet respectful revival of a song rooted in history and heart.
Originally recorded during a time of political unrest in Mali, “Kalabancoro” is a tribute to the people of Bamako’s Kalabancoro suburb, offering a sonic voice to those suffering in silence. In Ginton’s hands, the song receives a thoughtful and vibrant reinterpretation, preserving its timeless vocals while infusing it with modern Afro house grooves, warm guitar riffs, and a deep, emotive rhythm.
“This project means the world to me. It’s a tribute, a thank you, and a conversation with the voices that paved the way—while adding my own to the mix,” says Ginton.
🎶 A Deeply Personal Collaboration
Ginton’s connection to the project runs deep. He recalls growing up inspired by Richard Bona’s musicality and emotional expression, making this collaboration a surreal full-circle moment. The opportunity to work with both Bona and Keita—two towering figures in African music—was not only a professional milestone but a personal dream come true.
“When I saw that the track was Kalabancoro, I got goosebumps,” Ginton says. “The original message still feels incredibly relevant today, and I wanted to honor it while bringing the song into the now.”
The bones of the remix came together in just one hour—testament to how naturally the track flowed. With Ginton’s signature guitar sound, a slightly quickened tempo, and tasteful production flourishes, the new Kalabancoro stands as both a respectful homage and a modern anthem for reflection and unity.
