Targeting Militant Infrastructure
On Friday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) carried out a precision airstrike against the Mushtaha Tower, a prominent high-rise in Gaza City’s western Rimal district. According to Israeli military sources, the building was being used as a Hamas command hub, complete with surveillance posts, weapons storage, and underground access tunnels. “The IDF will not allow Hamas to operate with impunity inside civilian structures,” Defense Minister Israel Katz said after the strike. Katz added that the tower’s demolition was a necessary step in dismantling Hamas’ infrastructure inside Gaza City.
Warnings Issued Before Strike
Israeli officials emphasized that advance warnings were issued to civilians in the area, including those living in nearby encampments. Residents were urged to evacuate before the operation began, part of Israel’s broader policy to minimize civilian harm even as Hamas embeds itself in densely populated neighborhoods. Eyewitnesses confirmed that less than half an hour after evacuation notices, the building was hit. Israeli military leaders argue this demonstrates their effort to strike quickly while still providing civilians with the chance to flee.
Hamas’ Use of Civilian Cover
The IDF has long accused Hamas of deliberately using high-rises, schools, and hospitals as shields for military operations, making it far more difficult to conduct operations without risking civilian lives. The Mushtaha Tower, according to Israel, is the latest example of Hamas’ strategy of embedding within civilian areas to deter attacks and draw international condemnation when strikes occur. Israeli officials maintain that targeting such structures is essential for weakening Hamas’ operational capabilities. They point to intelligence suggesting that Hamas relied on Mushtaha Tower for coordination, surveillance, and storing weapons used against Israeli troops.
Broader Gaza City Offensive
The destruction of Mushtaha Tower comes as part of Israel’s broader push to secure northern Gaza City. Military officials report that the IDF now controls roughly 40% of the city and is determined to press forward until Hamas’ grip is broken and remaining Israeli hostages are freed. Defense leaders have made clear that further high-rises suspected of housing Hamas operations may be targeted in the coming days.
Balancing Civilian Safety with National Security
While international criticism continues to mount over the humanitarian cost of the Gaza conflict, Israel argues that its campaign is both defensive and necessary. Officials insist that the choice lies with Hamas: stop embedding inside civilian infrastructure, release hostages, and end attacks on Israel — or face continued strikes. “The gate to hell in Gaza is being opened by Hamas, not Israel,” Katz declared, underscoring the government’s view that military escalation is the only path to eliminating a threat that has persisted for years.
