Walmart is taking a major leap into artificial intelligence by allowing customers to shop directly through ChatGPT. The retail giant announced a new partnership with OpenAI that will let users browse, get recommendations, and purchase Walmart products seamlessly inside the ChatGPT app.
A New Kind of Shopping Experience
According to Walmart CEO Doug McMillon, the move marks a major shift in how people interact with e-commerce platforms. “For many years now, eCommerce shopping experiences have consisted of a search bar and a long list of item responses. That is about to change,” McMillon said in a statement. Instead of typing keywords into Walmart’s website, users can now describe what they’re looking for conversationally, for example, “I need a weeknight dinner for four under $20,” or “What’s a good beginner yoga mat?” ChatGPT will then recommend products from Walmart’s inventory and even handle checkout.
How It Works
The integration allows users to browse Walmart’s vast product catalog and complete purchases without leaving the ChatGPT platform. Once a customer finds an item, a “buy” option appears next to the product recommendation. Through a feature called “Instant Checkout,” users can securely purchase items using their existing Walmart or Sam’s Club accounts. The system pulls in Walmart’s real-time pricing, inventory, and delivery options, offering a frictionless way to shop through natural conversation.
