Kyle Stowers Powers Marlins Past Cubs 3-1 to Snap Skid at Foggy Wrigley

Kyle Stowers continued his power surge with a pair of solo home runs and a triple, and Ryan Weathers delivered five strong innings in his return to the rotation as the Miami Marlins snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the Chicago Cubs on a foggy Wednesday night at Wrigley Field.

Stowers homered in the second and fourth innings — the latter a towering shot just inside the right-field foul pole — giving him 10 homers on the season and four in his last six games. It was also his third multi-homer performance of the year, all coming in 2025. He added a triple to cap off a dynamic night at the plate.

Agustín Ramírez added a solo homer and a double, helping the Marlins avoid a sweep and win for just the fourth time in their last 17 games.

Weathers (1-0), making his first start of the season after recovering from a left flexor strain sustained during spring training, looked sharp. The left-hander gave up just two hits over five innings, allowing one run — a solo homer by Seiya Suzuki in the fourth — while striking out five and walking one on 76 pitches.

Four Miami relievers took over from there and combined for four scoreless innings. Calvin Faucher struck out Nico Hoerner to end a sixth-inning bases-loaded threat, and Jesús Tinoco earned his fourth save with a clean ninth inning just one day after blowing a two-run lead in Miami’s 5-4 loss.

Jameson Taillon (2-3) took the loss for Chicago, despite a solid outing in which he allowed three runs on four hits over six innings with seven strikeouts and no walks.

Stowers’ first homer gave Miami a 1-0 lead in the second, and he teamed up with Ramírez in the fourth to stretch the lead to 3-0 with back-to-back solo blasts. Suzuki’s solo shot to left-center in the bottom of the inning brought the Cubs within two, but Chicago couldn’t get closer.

One of their best chances came in the sixth when Pete Crow-Armstrong reached on an infield single after popping up a bunt that dropped between Faucher and third baseman Connor Norby, loading the bases with two outs. But Faucher fanned Hoerner to preserve the lead.

The Marlins return home to host the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday. The Cubs remain in Chicago to face the crosstown rival White Sox. Neither team has announced a starter for Friday’s games.
