Miami-Dade Caretaker Arrested for Orchestrating Violent Home Invasion
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A longtime caretaker has been arrested for allegedly orchestrating a violent home invasion that resulted in the theft of $10,000 from the daughter of the elderly couple she was responsible for caring for, authorities said.
Yamilet Ravelo Ramentol, 48, was taken into custody on Monday following an investigation by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office (MDSO) linking her to the January 2, 2024, robbery at an apartment in the Hammocks neighborhood, near the 17000 block of Southwest 104th Street.
Ravelo Ramentol faces multiple charges, including home invasion robbery without a firearm or weapon, conspiracy to commit home invasion robbery, battery on a person 65 or older, and burglary with assault or battery, according to jail records.
Planned Robbery and Betrayal of Trust
According to the arrest report, the victim was inside her bedroom when two masked men dressed in black entered the unlocked apartment. They forcibly broke into her room, restraining her in a chair while one suspect rummaged through her dresser. The intruders then fled with a travel bag containing approximately $10,000 in cash.
Investigators say Ravelo Ramentol had worked as a caretaker for the victim’s elderly parents for five years, giving her unsupervised access to the home. She was familiar with its layout, where valuables were stored, and the habit of leaving the front door unlocked—details she allegedly used to coordinate the attack.
The 75-year-old homeowner expressed shock over the betrayal, saying, “This was a nightmare. I have a bruise. Everything is broken.”
Surveillance Footage and Cellphone Records Reveal Key Evidence
Surveillance footage from the apartment complex showed Ravelo Ramentol arriving at the scene at 7:55 a.m., nearly three hours earlier than she told the victim she would be there.
Just six minutes later, a newer-model Mustang Mach-E with no license plate entered the complex. Authorities said the car was parked near her vehicle for over an hour while she remained inside.
Further footage captured one of the masked suspects getting into her car for three minutes before heading toward the victim’s apartment with the second suspect.
Detectives also tied Ravelo Ramentol to the crime through cellphone records. A court-ordered cell-site warrant placed her phone near the victim’s home at the time of the robbery, consistent with surveillance footage. Investigators also found that she had been in contact with a pre-paid “burner” phone before and after the crime. A search warrant later confirmed the burner phone was present at the crime scene during the robbery, suggesting it was used by one of the masked intruders.
Arrest and Ongoing Investigation
Detectives with the MDSO Robbery Bureau tracked down Ravelo Ramentol in Doral and took her into custody. She provided a statement, but it was redacted in the publicly released report.
Shockingly, despite allegedly orchestrating the robbery, Ravelo Ramentol continued working for the victim for more than a year after the incident.
The two male suspects involved in the home invasion have not yet been identified.
As of Tuesday, Ravelo Ramentol was being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
