MacKinnon’s Last-Minute Heroics Lift Canada Past Finland in Olympic Thriller

In a game that embodied the drama and intensity of Olympic hockey, Nathan MacKinnon delivered a moment for the ages, scoring with just 35.2 seconds remaining to propel Canada to a stunning 3–2 comeback victory over Finland men’s national ice hockey team in the semifinal of the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Played at the electric Santagiulia Arena in Milan, the semifinal clash saw Canada dig deep after falling into a two-goal deficit, ultimately punching its ticket to the gold medal game in dramatic fashion.

Despite entering as favorites, Canada looked out of rhythm early, missing the presence of injured captain Sidney Crosby. The Canadians managed just three shots through the first half of the opening period, struggling to establish offensive momentum.

Finland capitalized late in the first when Sam Bennett was penalized for goalie interference. Just three seconds into the power play, Mikko Rantanen buried the opening goal, giving Finland a 1–0 lead.

The Finns doubled their advantage early in the second period when Erik Haula netted a shorthanded backhand goal, putting Canada on its heels and seemingly in control of the game.

Facing elimination, Canada responded with urgency. On a power play midway through the second period, Cale Makar fired a shot through traffic that was deftly redirected by Sam Reinhart, cutting the deficit to 2–1 and igniting the comeback.

The pressure continued to build into the third period. Canada’s persistence paid off when Shea Theodore unleashed a booming slapshot from the point, beating the Finnish goaltender to tie the game at 2–2 midway through the period.

With overtime looming and tensions at their peak, Canada earned a late power play. With just one second remaining on the man advantage, MacKinnon seized the moment. Off a perfectly timed feed from Connor McDavid, MacKinnon ripped a shot past the goaltender, sending the arena into a frenzy.

The celebration was briefly paused as Finland challenged the play for offside, but after review, officials upheld the goal—confirming Canada’s thrilling victory.

The win sends Canada into Sunday’s gold medal game, where they will face the winner of the other semifinal between the United States and Slovakia. Finland, the defending champions, will regroup for Saturday’s bronze medal contest.

For Canada, the comeback victory not only showcased their resilience but also reaffirmed their championship pedigree. And at the center of it all was MacKinnon, whose clutch finish ensured this Olympic classic will be remembered for years to come.
