King’s Hawaiian traces its origins to 1950 when Robert R. Taira, the son of Japanese immigrants, opened Robert’s Bakery in Hilo, Hawaii. Initially a small cake and bread shop, Taira developed a version of Portuguese-inspired sweet bread, soft and slightly sweet, with ingredients including sugar, honey, and pineapple juice. The recipe quickly became a local favorite, setting the stage for what would become a nationally recognized brand.

Expanding to the Mainland

As tourists and locals began shipping the bread to the U.S. mainland, Taira saw an opportunity for growth. In 1977, he opened a bakery in Torrance, California, officially launching King’s Hawaiian. In 1983, the company introduced its iconic 12-pack of Original Hawaiian Sweet Dinner Rolls, a product that turned the brand into a household name across the country.

Father and Daughter at the Helm

Today, King’s Hawaiian is run by Mark Taira, Robert’s son, and his daughter Courtney Taira. Mark took over leadership in his twenties and has overseen tremendous growth, increasing the brand’s revenue more than fifteenfold. Courtney, a culinary school graduate with an MBA, manages the company’s restaurant division and helps expand the brand beyond grocery shelves. Together, their leadership combines operational expertise with a commitment to the family legacy.

A National Table Presence

King’s Hawaiian has grown into a major player in the U.S. bread market. Its sweet dinner rolls are a staple on American tables, particularly during holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, ranking as the second-most purchased edible grocery item nationwide. The company operates large-scale production facilities in California and Georgia, ensuring consistent quality and nationwide distribution.

The Importance of Family Ownership

The Taira family emphasizes that King’s Hawaiian remains a privately held, family-run business. This structure allows them to prioritize product quality and brand integrity over profit maximization. The father-daughter leadership team continues to uphold the values Robert Taira instilled in the business, maintaining a focus on flavor, consistency, and the aloha spirit that inspired the original bakery in Hilo.
