Monday Night Football Preview: Buffalo Bills (4-1) at Atlanta Falcons (2-2)

Monday, 7:15 p.m. EDT | ESPN | Series record: Falcons lead 7–6 | Last meeting: Bills beat Falcons 29–15 in Orchard Park, N.Y. (Jan. 2, 2022)

The lights will shine bright in Atlanta on Monday night as the Falcons return home from their bye week to host the AFC powerhouse Buffalo Bills in a primetime showdown. The matchup pits one of the NFL’s most dynamic offenses against one of the league’s most balanced young rosters — and marks Atlanta’s first Monday night home game since 2017.

The Bills and Falcons have faced off just 13 times since 1973, with Atlanta holding a slim 7–6 edge. The series began in the old Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium when Buffalo notched a 17–10 victory in 1973, but it’s been largely even since.

One of the most memorable meetings came in Toronto in 2013, when the Falcons edged the Bills 34–31 in overtime inside Rogers Centre — the final game of Buffalo’s short-lived “Bills in Toronto Series.” Atlanta had won four straight at home before Buffalo broke that streak with a 23–17 victory in 2017.

The Bills enter Week 6 smarting from a surprising 23–20 loss to New England — just their sixth defeat following a regular-season loss since 2019 (they’re 22–6 in that span). Under Sean McDermott, Buffalo has shown a strong ability to respond on the road, posting a 10–2 record when playing away after a loss.

Quarterback Josh Allen remains the key to Buffalo’s success. With two touchdown passes last week, he broke Hall of Famer Jim Kelly’s franchise record with 68 career multi-TD games. But turnovers have crept back into his game — Allen has three giveaways in his last two contests after a long stretch of efficiency that saw just one interception in his previous 12 starts. Buffalo is 45–28 when Allen commits at least one turnover, but just 15–20 when they come after halftime.

Running back James Cook was limited to 49 yards last week, snapping his streak of four consecutive 100-yard-from-scrimmage games. His touchdown streak also ended at eight games. Buffalo’s rushing attack has been less productive lately — the team failed to score a rushing TD for just the sixth time since 2023.

On defense, linebacker Terrel Bernard continues to make a name for himself with three takeaways (two fumble recoveries and one interception), anchoring a unit that thrives in controlled conditions. The Bills are 11–4 in indoor games under McDermott, averaging 27.5 points per outing in domed environments.

The Falcons used their bye week to regroup after a 2–2 start, highlighted by impressive play from rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. The No. 8 overall pick set career highs by completing 76.9% of his passes for 313 yards in Atlanta’s win over Washington before the break, showing poise and precision beyond his years.

Atlanta has quietly built one of the NFL’s most efficient offensive lines — the Falcons have allowed only five sacks, second fewest in the league (only the Colts have allowed fewer with four). That protection has allowed Penix and the run game to stay balanced and explosive.

Defensively, rookie Clark Phillips III Watts has been a standout in the secondary, leading all NFL rookies with two interceptions. The Falcons’ defense, coordinated by Ryan Nielsen, has shown flashes of dominance and will be tasked with slowing down Allen’s dual-threat ability.

Atlanta also carries confidence in primetime. The Falcons were 2–0 on Monday nights last season, winning tough road matchups at Las Vegas and Philadelphia. A win here would mark their first home Monday night victory since 2017 — the same year Buffalo last visited Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Josh Allen’s response: Can Allen protect the ball and rebound after a shaky two-week stretch? Rookie composure: How will Michael Penix Jr. handle the pressure against one of the league’s top defenses? Trenches battle: Atlanta’s O-line vs. Buffalo’s pass rush could decide the game? Dome dominance: Buffalo has thrived indoors — can they keep that streak alive?

This matchup has the makings of a close, high-energy battle. The rested Falcons will try to capitalize on home-field advantage and a lively Mercedes-Benz Stadium crowd, while Buffalo will look to reassert itself as a top AFC contender.

Expect Josh Allen and the Bills offense to make big plays under the lights, but if Penix remains efficient and the Falcons’ protection holds, Atlanta could push this one deep into the fourth quarter.
