Nicke Reiner Pleads Not Guilty
Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first degree murder in the deaths of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and philanthropist Michele Singer Reiner. The plea was entered Monday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, where his attorney formally responded to the charges on his behalf. Reiner, 32, is accused of fatally stabbing his parents inside their Brentwood home in December 2025. Prosecutors allege the killings were willful and deliberate and have filed special circumstance allegations, citing multiple victims and the use of a deadly weapon. Those enhancements significantly elevate the potential penalties under California law.
Court Proceedings and Potential Penalties
During Monday’s hearing, Reiner stood in custody as his defense attorney entered the not guilty plea. He remains jailed without bail. Because of the special circumstance allegations attached to the case, he faces the possibility of life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted. Prosecutors have not publicly announced whether they intend to seek the death penalty. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for later this spring. At that stage, prosecutors must present enough evidence to convince a judge there is probable cause for the case to proceed to trial. Reiner has waived his right to a speedy trial.
The Victims
Rob Reiner, 78, was a prominent director and actor whose career spanned decades. He first gained national recognition starring as Michael Stivic on the television sitcom All in the Family before becoming a celebrated filmmaker. His directing credits include This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, and When Harry Met Sally, films widely regarded as cultural touchstones. Michele Singer Reiner, 70, was known for her philanthropic work and involvement in charitable initiatives focused on children and the arts. The couple had been married since 1989 and were longtime residents of Los Angeles.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive. Law enforcement officials said both victims suffered multiple sharp force injuries. Investigators continue to process evidence as the case moves through the court system. As the legal process unfolds, Nick Reiner is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
