Pensacola Bar Owner Arrested After Noise Complaint Escalates Into Violent Confrontation With Deputies
PENSACOLA, Fla. — A late night noise complaint at an unlicensed entertainment venue in Escambia County escalated into a physical confrontation with sheriff’s deputies, leaving the owner behind bars facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after officers said he resisted arrest and assaulted a deputy.
The incident occurred early Sunday morning at “Our Spot,” an establishment operating on West Michigan Avenue in Pensacola, where the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were responding to repeated complaints of loud music and possible illegal alcohol sales. Authorities say the confrontation ended with deputies striking the owner several times before taking him into custody.
Deputies Responded to Repeated Noise Complaints
According to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the property around 3:15 a.m. after receiving continued complaints about loud music violating local noise ordinances. Investigators said the business had generated 15 calls for service since April, making it a location already familiar to law enforcement.
When deputies arrived, they observed numerous patrons outside the venue carrying plastic cups, prompting concerns that alcohol was being sold without the required licensing. Officials said deputies attempted to inspect the premises to determine whether the business was operating as an illegal bottle club.
Owner Accused of Blocking Deputies
Authorities identified the owner as Courtney “Peewee” Wright. According to the arrest report, Wright allegedly attempted to prevent deputies from entering by pulling the door closed and positioning himself in front of it. Investigators say the situation escalated when deputies attempted to arrest Wright.
The Sheriff’s Office alleges Wright shoved one deputy and physically resisted officers as they attempted to place him into custody. Body camera footage released by authorities reportedly shows deputies and Wright struggling before one deputy delivered multiple closed fist strikes to Wright’s head and upper body in an effort to gain control. Wright was then handcuffed and transported to jail.
Multiple Criminal Charges Filed
Wright now faces several charges, including:
- Battery on a law enforcement officer
- Resisting an officer with violence
- Operating a bottle club without a license
- Violating local noise ordinances
Court records show Wright is being held without bond on the battery on a law enforcement officer charge.
Landlord Describes Ongoing Problems
The property’s landlord, Timothy Vaughn, told reporters the venue had become a significant problem for the surrounding neighborhood. Vaughn described excessive trash, discarded liquor bottles, large crowds numbering in the thousands during some events, and recurring complaints involving intoxicated patrons. He characterized the situation as a “nightmare” for neighboring property owners.
Family Disputes Characterization of Business
Wright’s family disputes several of the allegations surrounding the business. His brother, Jeremiah Lewis, told reporters that Wright consistently paid rent and said the landlord knew the property was being used as an entertainment venue. The family suggested the dispute extends beyond the events that unfolded during Sunday’s arrest and questioned the portrayal of the business by critics.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings Continue
Authorities have not announced whether additional charges will be filed against anyone else connected to the establishment. The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the alleged licensing violations and the circumstances surrounding the confrontation. Wright is expected to appear in court as prosecutors move forward with the criminal case.
