Purdy’s Five-TD Night Fuels 49ers Win, 48-27 Over Colts on MNF

Brock Purdy delivered the finest performance of his young career, throwing a career-high five touchdown passes as the San Francisco 49ers rolled past the Indianapolis Colts 48-27 on Monday Night Football for their fifth consecutive victory.

San Francisco (11-4) continued its late-season surge to stay firmly in the hunt for both the NFC West title and the conference’s top seed. The win also snapped a five-game losing streak in the series against Indianapolis that dated back to former Colts coach Jim Mora’s infamous “playoffs” rant in November 2001.

Purdy was the clear catalyst. He completed 25 of 34 passes for 295 yards, directing an offense that piled up 440 total yards and didn’t punt for a second straight week. Aside from a lone interception, the 49ers’ offense operated with near-total control against an overmatched Colts defense.

Christian McCaffrey once again showcased his all-around brilliance, rushing 21 times for 117 yards while adding six catches for 29 yards and two touchdowns. George Kittle chipped in seven receptions for 115 yards and a score, while Purdy also found Demarcus Robinson and Jauan Jennings in the end zone as San Francisco spread the wealth.

The game’s final punctuation came late in the fourth quarter when linebacker Dee Winters intercepted Philip Rivers’ final pass and returned it 74 yards for a touchdown, sealing the blowout and sending Levi’s Stadium into celebration.

Indianapolis (8-7), meanwhile, continued a troubling late-season slide. The loss clinched AFC playoff spots for Buffalo, Jacksonville, and the Los Angeles Chargers, while the Colts dropped their fifth straight game and sixth in their last seven, a skid that has nearly extinguished their postseason hopes.

Rivers, 44, showed flashes of vintage form in just his second game back after a five-year layoff. He finished 23 of 35 for 277 yards with two touchdowns and the costly interception. He started strong, throwing a 20-yard touchdown pass to Alec Pierce on the opening drive. Pierce finished with four catches for 86 yards and two scores.

Purdy quickly answered with a 22-yard touchdown strike to Robinson, and after a Colts fumble, hit McCaffrey on a 2-yard scoring pass to give San Francisco a 14-7 lead. Rivers tied it early in the second quarter with a precise 16-yard touchdown throw to Pierce, but Purdy responded again, breaking the tie with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Kittle.

After the teams traded field goals, Colts kicker Eddie Piñeiro narrowly missed a 64-yard attempt that struck the crossbar as time expired in the first half, leaving San Francisco up 24-17 at the break.

The 49ers picked up right where they left off. Purdy capped the opening drive of the second half with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jennings to push the lead to 31-17. Jonathan Taylor’s 1-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter pulled Indianapolis within 34-27, but any momentum was short-lived.

Purdy found McCaffrey again, this time from 9 yards out with 7:37 remaining, and Winters’ interception return moments later removed any doubt.

The 49ers host Chicago on Saturday night in a possible playoff preview, while the Colts close out their home schedule Sunday against AFC South-leading Jacksonville.
