Sean “Diddy” Combs Sentenced to 50 Months in Prison on Prostitution Charges

Sean “Diddy” Combs Sentenced to 50 Months in Federal Prison for Prostitution Convictions

“A history of good works can’t wash away the record in this case, which shows that you abused the power and control over the lives of women who you professed to love.” — Judge Arun Subramanian

Conviction and Sentencing

Sean “Diddy” Combs, the 55-year-old hip-hop mogul and entrepreneur, was sentenced on Friday to 50 months in federal prison following his conviction on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. A Manhattan jury in July found Combs guilty of arranging the interstate transport of women, including former girlfriend Cassie Ventura and another victim identified as “Jane” for drug-fueled sex encounters.

Judge Arun Subramanian delivered the sentence in Manhattan federal court, imposing not only the prison term but also the maximum fine of $500,000 and five years of supervised release. Combs has already spent roughly 13 months in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn since his 2024 arrest, which will count toward his term.

Combs faced a maximum of 20 years in prison. Federal prosecutors had pushed for more than 11 years, citing the severity of the offenses, while defense attorneys argued for no more than 14 months. Subramanian rejected both extremes, calling the government’s request “not reasonable” but stressing that the defense’s proposal ignored the seriousness of the crimes.

Judge’s Message to Survivors

In announcing the sentence, Subramanian emphasized the need to send a message of accountability.

“To Ms. Ventura and the other brave survivors that came forward, I want to say first: We heard you. I am proud of you for coming to the court to tell the world what really happened.”

The judge added that because Combs assaulted multiple victims, the court could not be assured that he would not reoffend if released too soon. He concluded by telling Combs directly, “I’m counting on you to make the most of your second chance.”

Combs’s Apology and Plea for Mercy

Before sentencing, Combs addressed the court in a 12-minute statement. He apologized to Ventura, to “Jane,” and to all survivors of domestic violence, describing his own conduct as “disgusting, shameful and sick.” Turning to his family, Combs said, “I want to apologize to my seven children, y’all deserve better. I failed you as a son,” while addressing his mother, Janice Combs. He begged the judge for mercy, adding, “I can’t change the past, but I can change the future.”

Defense Arguments and Mitigation

Defense attorneys argued that Combs’s crimes stemmed from a combination of untreated trauma and drug addiction. They cited his father’s murder, the overdose death of an uncle, the killing of longtime friend Christopher Wallace (The Notorious B.I.G.), and decades of substance abuse.

Lawyers also described harsh conditions inside the Metropolitan Detention Center, including threats from other inmates and lack of basic living necessities, as evidence that Combs had already endured punishment. At one point, they described him as a “civil rights leader” whose contributions to music, business, and philanthropy should weigh in his favor.

A Miami pastor, Rev. Gary Johnson, also testified on his behalf, urging the court to allow Combs to return to Miami for community outreach, saying, “Sean needs an opportunity. I am asking you to give him to us and we won’t let you down.”

The Broader Impact

The sentencing closes one chapter in a legal saga that has engulfed one of the music industry’s most influential figures. Combs’s downfall marks a stark reversal for an artist once celebrated for his entrepreneurial drive and philanthropy. For survivors, however, the message from the court was clear: celebrity status and past achievements do not erase accountability for exploitation and abuse.

“Exploitation and violence against women is met with real accountability,” Judge Subramanian said.
