United Airlines Flight Diversion
A United Airlines flight traveling from Chicago to Minneapolis was forced to make an emergency landing in Wisconsin after a passenger allegedly attempted to breach the cockpit, prompting aviation authorities to issue a hijacking alert and triggering a major law enforcement response.
The incident occurred aboard United Flight 2005 on the evening of May 29. The Boeing 737 departed Chicago O’Hare International Airport with 147 passengers and six crew members on board. Roughly 90 minutes into the flight, the crew reported a serious security concern involving a 75 year old passenger who allegedly made multiple attempts to gain access to the cockpit.
Emergency Diversion to Madison
Faced with the escalating situation, pilots diverted the aircraft to Dane County Regional Airport in Madison, Wisconsin. Air traffic control communications reviewed by multiple news outlets revealed the severity of the incident, with authorities discussing what was described as a potential hijacking scenario. The emergency response included local law enforcement, airport officials, and federal investigators.
Airport officials said law enforcement personnel on board the aircraft helped restrain the passenger before the plane landed safely. Deputies from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office met the flight on arrival and removed the suspect from the aircraft. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew members.
Passengers Describe Tense Moments
Passengers onboard described a chaotic scene as several individuals worked to prevent the man from reaching the cockpit area. Reports indicate the passenger repeatedly moved toward the front of the aircraft, requiring intervention from flight attendants and others on board. Air traffic control recordings later revealed that authorities struggled for some time before gaining control of the individual.
Witness accounts reported that flight attendants asked if anyone on board spoke Russian, while some passengers claimed the man was speaking Russian during the disturbance. Authorities have not publicly confirmed those details.
FBI Investigating Incident
Following the emergency landing, the FBI joined local authorities in investigating the incident. Federal officials confirmed that agents responded after receiving notification that the flight had been diverted because of a significant security concern. The passenger was detained and removed from the aircraft for questioning.
Subsequent reports indicated investigators believe the passenger may have been experiencing a mental health crisis. According to law enforcement statements, no criminal charges had been announced as of Sunday, and family members were contacted following the incident. Federal authorities continue to review the circumstances surrounding the disturbance.
Flight Continued to Minneapolis
After authorities secured the situation and completed their initial investigation, passengers were allowed to continue their journey. Flight 2005 eventually departed Madison and landed safely in Minneapolis several hours behind schedule. United Airlines said the diversion was necessary to address a security concern involving an unruly passenger.
Rare Aviation Security Scare
Attempted cockpit breaches and hijacking alerts remain extremely rare in the United States, particularly in the years following the security changes implemented after the September 11 terrorist attacks. Modern aircraft feature reinforced cockpit doors and strict security procedures designed to prevent unauthorized access to flight controls. Aviation experts note that those safeguards played a critical role in ensuring the incident ended without injuries or further escalation.
