The Dallas Cowboys are adding a future Hall of Fame pass rusher to their defense, bringing Texas native Von Miller home on a one-year contract.
The Cowboys announced Sunday night that Miller has agreed to join Dallas. The deal is worth $5.5 million and can reach a maximum value of $7.5 million, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Miller, 37, is entering his 15th NFL season and brings an impressive résumé to a Cowboys defense that has already made significant additions this offseason. The longtime edge rusher enters the season with 138.5 career sacks, the most among active NFL players.
The move also carries a strong Texas connection. Miller attended DeSoto High School before playing college football at Texas A&M, and he now gets the opportunity to finish his career by playing for his hometown-state team.
Dallas is expected to use Miller as part of a pass-rush rotation featuring Rashan Gary, Donovan Ezeiruaku and first-round pick Malachi Lawrence. Sam Williams, James Houston and Marist Liufau could also factor into the Cowboys’ defensive front.
Miller is coming off a productive 2025 season with the Washington Commanders, recording nine sacks. It was his highest sack total since 2021, when he finished with 9.5 sacks while splitting the season between the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Rams.
The Broncos selected Miller with the second overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, and he quickly established himself as one of the league’s premier defensive players. He was named Defensive Rookie of the Year and has earned eight Pro Bowl selections and seven first- or second-team All-Pro honors.
Miller has also twice finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting, in 2012 and 2016. His career résumé includes a Super Bowl 50 MVP award after helping Denver defeat the Carolina Panthers to win the championship following the 2015 season.
His arrival represents another major statement by Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones. At the beginning of training camp, Jones hinted that Dallas could make another significant addition to its defense.
The Cowboys followed through last week by signing defensive tackle Quinnen Williams to a three-year, $105.9 million extension. Now, they have added one of the most accomplished pass rushers of his generation.
Miller may no longer be the dominant force he was during his prime, but his experience, production and ability to pressure quarterbacks give Dallas another veteran weapon for its defensive rotation.
For the Cowboys, the signing is about more than adding another pass rusher. It is also the return of a Texas football star to his home state, as Miller begins what could be the final chapter of a remarkable NFL career in Dallas.
