History

The 15th Street Fisheries is a historic seafood restaurant located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It was established in 1978 by Rodney Ely, a local fisherman, and his wife, Nancy. Originally, the restaurant was housed in a small wooden building on the south side of the 15th Street Marina. It quickly gained a reputation for serving some of the freshest seafood in the area, and soon outgrew its original location. In 1986, the restaurant moved to its current location in the marina’s historic Fisheries Building. The building was constructed in the 1920s and was used as a seafood processing plant until the 1950s. It was then converted into a restaurant in the 1960s before being purchased by the Elys in the 1980s. Today, the 15th Street Fisheries is one of the most popular seafood restaurants in Fort Lauderdale, attracting locals and tourists alike. Over the years, the 15th Street Fisheries has undergone several renovations and updates. In 2011, the restaurant underwent a major renovation that included a new kitchen, bar, and dining area. Despite these changes, the restaurant has managed to maintain its historic charm and continues to serve some of the freshest seafood in South Florida.

Owners

The 15th Street Fisheries is owned by the Ely family, who have been involved in the fishing industry for generations. Rodney Ely, the founder of the restaurant, was a commercial fisherman who caught and sold seafood to local restaurants and markets. He saw an opportunity to create a restaurant that served the freshest seafood possible and opened the 15th Street Fisheries in 1978 with his wife, Nancy. Today, the restaurant is run by Rodney and Nancy’s son, Kevin Ely, who grew up working in the family business. Kevin is a skilled fisherman and is involved in all aspects of the restaurant, from sourcing the freshest seafood to overseeing the daily operations. He has continued his parents’ legacy of providing high-quality seafood in a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. The Ely family is deeply committed to sustainability and responsible fishing practices. They work closely with local fishermen and seafood purveyors to source the freshest seafood while minimizing their impact on the environment. They are also actively involved in the community, supporting local organizations and events. The Elys’ dedication to quality, sustainability, and community has helped make the 15th Street Fisheries one of the most beloved seafood restaurants in Fort Lauderdale.

15th Street Marina

The Fisheries Building Marina, also known as the 15th Street Marina, is a historic marina located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It was an important hub for the fishing industry in the area, providing a place for fishermen to sell their catch and for processors to prepare the seafood for distribution. In the 1950s, the demand for seafood began to decline, and the Fisheries Building Marina fell into disrepair. However, in the 1960s, the building was repurposed as a restaurant, and the marina was renovated to include dockage for boats.
