Suspect Arrested in Violent Fort Lauderdale Home Invasion

Fort Lauderdale – Authorities have arrested a 48-year-old man, Joseph Soini, accused of brutally beating a 75-year-old man during an armed home invasion robbery on Banyan Street, Fort Lauderdale. Soini is now facing charges of grand theft auto and possession of cocaine.

The incident occurred late Friday night, around 10:30 p.m., when Fort Lauderdale Police responded to a call about a violent home invasion. Upon arrival, officers discovered the elderly victim severely beaten. He was immediately transported to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

According to police reports, the victim had been taking out his trash when he returned to his apartment to find Soini inside, rummaging through his belongings. Security camera footage from the building provides a detailed account of the crime. The footage shows Soini entering the building and taking the elevator to an apartment upstairs. Less than 10 minutes later, he was seen returning to the first floor before fleeing in the victim’s vehicle.

Authorities report that Soini attacked the victim, hitting him with a trophy and attempting to strangle him. After the assault, Soini stole the victim’s vehicle, bicycle, and approximately $4,000 in cash before fleeing the scene.

Around 1:20 a.m. on Saturday, law enforcement located the stolen vehicle near 330 N. Federal Highway with the assistance of a Broward Sheriff’s Office helicopter. Officers successfully immobilized the vehicle using a grappler, apprehending Soini without further incident.

The investigation into the home invasion is ongoing, and additional charges may be filed as the details continue to emerge.
