81-Year-Old Man Works Six Days a Week to Pay Wife’s Cancer Bills, Then Strangers Step In

A Very Sad Story About Medicine, Cancer and the Elderly Has a Happy Ending

This is a story that manages to make the American healthcare system, an 81 year old man’s work ethic, and the kindness of strangers collide in one pretty remarkable story. Donald Johnson was supposed to be enjoying retirement. Instead, he was spending his days driving hundreds of miles around the Dallas-Fort Worth area, delivering lost luggage to people’s homes so he could help pay for his wife’s cancer treatment. Because apparently retirement is just a suggestion when the medical bills keep arriving.

Johnson and his wife, Josephine, have been married for 57 years. Josephine is battling pancreatic cancer, and despite having Medicare and insurance, the couple found themselves struggling under the weight of medical expenses, prescription costs and everyday bills. After being retired for nearly a decade, Donald went back to work.

What Did Donald Have to Do for Work?

His job was not exactly a comfortable retirement gig. Johnson works as an independent contractor delivering luggage that has been lost during air travel. According to the GoFundMe campaign created on his behalf, he has driven more than 200,000 miles doing the work, putting enormous wear on his vehicle in the process.

He reportedly worked six days a week, sometimes until 11 p.m., driving between 300 and 400 miles a day around the Dallas-Fort Worth area. When Erin Howell, a resident of The Colony, Texas, saw Johnson delivering one of her lost bags, she was stunned by what she witnessed. Her doorbell camera captured the 81-year-old struggling to carry heavy luggage up a flight of stairs.

Howell went outside to meet him and learned why he was still doing such physically demanding work at his age. When she asked why he continued working, Johnson reportedly gave her a brutally simple answer: “It’s the only job that will hire me.”

A Caring Person Starts a GoFundMe That Catches Fire

That conversation led Howell to create a GoFundMe campaign to help Donald and Josephine. The campaign quickly took on a life of its own. What started as an effort to help an elderly man stop working and spend more time caring for his wife turned into a massive show of support from strangers across the country. By September 25th, nearly $600,000 had been raised through approximately 10,500 donations. At the time of this writing, the tally is over $700,000!

The money is intended to help cover Josephine’s cancer-related expenses and everyday living costs while allowing Donald to finally step away from the road and care for his wife. Donald recently said he believes the fundraising means he may finally be able to stop working. “I think I’m going to be able to stop working, and that’s amazing,” he said in an interview with FOX 4.

The Media (Including Chris Cuomo) Lends a Hand

The couple recently appeared together on CUOMO on NewsNation, where they talked about their situation and the extraordinary response from people who had never met them. Donald described the response as feeling almost unreal. “It seems unreal. It seems to be a miracle,” he said, expressing his gratitude to the thousands of people who donated.

He also said the response demonstrated something he believes is still very much alive in America: people willing to help when they see someone in need. For Josephine, the response has apparently provided something just as important as the money: hope. She told FOX 4 that the messages and prayers from strangers have helped her face the battle differently. “I can face it. I think that’s the big difference,” Josephine said.

Donald has also said that the outpouring of support has changed his wife’s outlook, giving her a more positive attitude as she continues her fight. “We’re going to beat this,” Donald said. There is something particularly striking about this story because Donald wasn’t asking anyone for help. He was simply doing what he believed he had to do. At 81, he got behind the wheel, drove hundreds of miles, carried other people’s luggage and kept going because the woman he had been married to for 57 years needed him.

Then someone noticed. And instead of simply feeling sorry for him, Erin Howell did something about it. One person started a GoFundMe. Thousands of strangers followed. Now, after more than half a million dollars in donations, Donald Johnson may finally be able to put the luggage down, park the car and spend his time where he apparently wanted to be all along: beside his wife. Human beings occasionally get it right. Annoyingly rare, but still worth noticing.
