Chelsea Beats Everton 2-0 as Pedro Neto Scores Twice in Second Half

Neto’s Second Half Brace Seals Chelsea Victory at Everton

Pedro Neto scored twice in the second half to lead Chelsea to a 2-0 victory over Everton on Saturday in a Premier League match overshadowed by a serious-looking head injury to Chelsea goalkeeper Emi Martínez.

Neto broke the deadlock just 44 seconds after halftime before completing the first Premier League brace of his career, helping Chelsea secure three points on the road and ending Everton’s unbeaten start to the season. The result also delivered a long-awaited defensive milestone for Chelsea, who recorded their first clean sheet in 23 top-flight matches.

However, the victory came at a cost for the visitors, as Martínez was carried off the pitch and taken to the hospital following a collision of heads with Everton center-back Jarrad Branthwaite. Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders, 21, entered the match for his Premier League debut and became Chelsea’s youngest goalkeeper to appear in the competition. Despite the difficult circumstances, he helped the visitors see out the victory and preserve the clean sheet.

Controversial Challenge Adds Fuel to Everton’s Frustration

The match’s biggest flashpoint came when Chelsea’s Morgan Rogers launched a lunging challenge on Everton’s James Garner, leaving both players on the ground. Referee Paul Tierney and the video assistant referee determined that the incident did not warrant a second yellow card or a straight red, much to Everton’s frustration.

The decision became even more contentious for the home supporters when Rogers played a key role in Chelsea’s opening goal less than a minute into the second half. Earlier in the contest, Rogers and Everton captain James Tarkowski had both been booked after Rogers reacted to being barged to the ground off the ball by grabbing Tarkowski’s shirt.

Rogers later went down in the penalty area after contact with Tarkowski, further intensifying the hostility directed toward him by the home crowd. Despite the controversy, Chelsea capitalized on their opportunity to take control of the match, while Everton were left to rue the decisions and missed chances that contributed to their first defeat of the campaign.

Chelsea Strike Early After Halftime

Chelsea continued their reputation as one of the Premier League’s fastest-starting teams, finding the breakthrough just 44 seconds after the restart. Jorrel Hato sent Rogers racing down the left flank before the forward cut the ball back into the penalty area.

Neto found himself unmarked after Vitaliy Mykolenko failed to track his run, giving the Chelsea attacker time to pick his spot and guide a low finish inside the post, with the ball slipping underneath Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford’s arm. The goal gave Chelsea the advantage and shifted the pressure onto an Everton side that had been competitive throughout the first half.

Pickford remained busy as Chelsea looked to extend their lead, tipping over a Neto effort while Garner was still waiting for permission to return to the field following treatment for the earlier challenge. Everton continued to search for an equalizer, but Chelsea’s defensive organization and Penders’ assured introduction helped the visitors withstand the pressure.

Neto Completes His Brace to Secure the Points

Everton’s hopes of salvaging a result suffered another blow when Christian Nørgaard, making his delayed debut for the club following an injury, lost possession near the halfway line. Chelsea reacted quickly to the turnover, with Neto responding first to a loose ball and finishing to double the visitors’ advantage.

The goal completed the winger’s first career Premier League brace and put Chelsea firmly in control. Even with 11 minutes of added time remaining, Everton could not find a way back into the contest. Chelsea held on for a valuable away victory, while Neto’s clinical finishing proved decisive in a match that had offered the hosts plenty of encouragement before the break.

Everton Create Chances but Fail to Capitalize

Although the 2-0 scoreline was harsh on Everton, the hosts created several promising opportunities and were competitive for long stretches of the first half. Cole Palmer and Jordan Henderson tested Pickford from distance early on, while Everton gradually grew into the match. Merlin Röhl forced Martínez into a save, and the Chelsea goalkeeper was subsequently penalized for delaying the restart.

Martínez then produced a better stop to deny Thierno Barry, who had a largely open goal to aim at but directed his header straight at the Argentine goalkeeper. Martínez also tipped over a Jack Grealish effort that bounced off the turf and threatened to drop beneath the crossbar.

Chelsea had opportunities of their own, with Moisés Caicedo striking a superbly controlled volley against the junction of the post and crossbar following Henderson’s deep corner. Neto also threatened before halftime, forcing Pickford into another save as the match grew increasingly physical and contentious.

Penders Steps In After Martínez Injury

The most concerning moment of the afternoon came when Martínez collided heads with Branthwaite, leaving the Chelsea goalkeeper unable to continue. He was carried off and taken to the hospital for further assessment. Penders replaced him for the final 25 minutes, facing the challenge of making his Premier League debut in a tense away fixture.

The young Belgian showed little sign of nerves, confidently charging toward the edge of his penalty area to punch away a Garner cross. His composed performance helped Chelsea navigate the closing stages without conceding.

For Chelsea, the clean sheet was a significant achievement after a run of 23 Premier League matches without one. For Everton, the defeat ended an encouraging unbeaten opening to the season despite a performance that suggested they could have taken something from the game.

Chelsea ultimately left Merseyside with all three points, thanks to Neto’s second-half finishing and a resilient defensive display. The victory was tempered by concern for Martínez, whose injury cast a shadow over an otherwise successful afternoon for the visitors.
