Florida Atlantic Piles Up 566 Yards of Offense
Florida Atlantic delivered its most impressive performance of the season Thursday night, overwhelming American Conference leader UTSA 60-29 to become bowl eligible in a Week 10 conference matchup. Quarterback Caden Veltkamp threw four touchdown passes, Leonard Farrow rushed for 126 yards and a touchdown, and the Owls piled up 566 yards of total offense to secure their sixth victory of the season.
Florida Atlantic improved to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in American Conference play, reaching the six-win mark needed for bowl eligibility. The loss was the first conference defeat of the season for UTSA, which fell to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in league play. The Roadrunners dropped a half-game behind North Texas in the conference standings and into a second-place tie with Memphis.
Caden Veltkamp Leads FAU’s Offensive Explosion
Veltkamp orchestrated a productive night for the Owls, completing 17 of 25 passes for 210 yards and four touchdown passes. Three of those scoring connections went to Easton Messer, who finished with seven receptions for 85 yards. Messer also contributed with his arm, throwing a touchdown pass to give Florida Atlantic another dimension offensively. The Owls were particularly effective on the ground, finishing with 342 rushing yards. Farrow led the way with 126 yards on just 12 carries, averaging 10.5 yards per attempt.
Ethan Ervin added 92 yards on 15 carries as FAU consistently found running room against the UTSA defense. Farrow delivered one of the biggest plays of the night late in the third quarter. Bursting through the middle of the defense, he slipped a tackle and raced 59 yards into the end zone to extend the Owls’ advantage to 50-29. The explosive run helped put the game out of reach and capped another impressive stretch for the FAU offense.
UTSA Suffers First American Conference Loss
UTSA quarterback Owen McCown completed 20 of 35 passes for 265 yards and three touchdown passes, but the Roadrunners struggled to keep pace with Florida Atlantic’s offensive production. A’Marion Peterson provided one of UTSA’s biggest highlights with a 52-yard touchdown run. He finished with 77 rushing yards, but the Roadrunners could not generate enough defensive stops to overcome the Owls’ offensive attack.
Florida Atlantic’s 60 points and 566 total yards proved too much for a UTSA team that entered Thursday night unbeaten in conference play. The defeat also creates a significant shift in the American Conference standings, with UTSA losing its grip on the top position as the regular season moves toward its final weeks.
Up Coming Games for FAU and UTSA
Both teams return to action November 14 for important American Conference matchups. UTSA will host North Texas in a game with major conference championship implications. The Roadrunners will look to bounce back and remain in contention for the American Conference title.
Florida Atlantic will travel to face Tulsa as the Owls look to build on Thursday night’s dominant performance and continue their push toward a strong finish to the season. With bowl eligibility secured, FAU can now turn its attention toward finishing the regular season on a high note.
