FIFA Rejects Belgium’s Request as Folarin Balogun Remains Eligible for USMNT’s World Cup Clash

The controversy surrounding United States striker Folarin Balogun’s overturned World Cup suspension has taken another dramatic turn, with FIFA rejecting an attempt by the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) to challenge the forward’s eligibility ahead of Monday’s FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 showdown against Belgium.

In a statement released Monday, FIFA confirmed that Belgium’s request had been ruled inadmissible, effectively ending the federation’s effort to prevent Balogun from featuring in one of the tournament’s marquee knockout matches.

“The FIFA Appeal Committee has rendered a request submitted by the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) as inadmissible in relation to the FIFA Disciplinary Committee’s decision to suspend for one year the match suspension imposed on United States national-team player Folarin Balogun following his dismissal for a direct red card during the FIFA World Cup 2026 match between the United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina, played on 1 July 2026 at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium,” FIFA said in its statement.

The ruling means Balogun remains fully eligible for the United States, providing a significant boost for the Americans as they prepare to face one of Europe’s strongest sides with a place in the quarterfinals on the line.

The Belgian federation submitted its request to FIFA earlier Monday after expressing frustration over the lack of communication regarding the disciplinary ruling that reversed Balogun’s automatic suspension.

However, FIFA’s Appeal Committee determined Belgium’s submission could not even be considered, ruling it inadmissible and leaving no legal avenue for the federation to prevent Balogun from taking the field.

The decision effectively ends Belgium’s attempt to influence the disciplinary process just hours before kickoff.

The controversy began after Balogun received a straight red card during the United States’ Round of 32 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Under normal FIFA regulations, the dismissal would have resulted in an automatic one-match suspension, forcing the American striker to miss the Round of 16.

Instead, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee suspended the implementation of the automatic ban for one year under Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, allowing Balogun to remain available while placing the suspension in abeyance unless another disciplinary offense occurs during the probationary period.

The decision sparked immediate debate across the football world, with many supporters and analysts questioning why the automatic suspension had been lifted.

The issue has also reached the highest levels of politics.

Earlier Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that he had discussed Balogun’s disciplinary case directly with FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

According to Trump, he asked FIFA to review the red card after widespread debate in the United States regarding the incident.

Infantino confirmed the conversation, while emphasizing that FIFA’s judicial system operates independently from the organization’s executive leadership.

The FIFA president explained that he informed Trump the matter would ultimately be decided by FIFA’s independent judicial bodies rather than by FIFA’s political leadership.

That independent process ultimately resulted in the suspension being lifted and, now, Belgium’s challenge being dismissed.

Balogun’s availability represents a major lift for U.S. head coach Mauricio Pochettino.

The Arsenal-born striker has become one of the focal points of the American attack throughout the tournament, providing pace, movement and clinical finishing that have helped the United States reach the knockout stages.

His partnership with Christian Pulisic and the rest of the U.S. frontline gives the Americans significantly greater attacking firepower against a Belgium side featuring one of Europe’s deepest squads.

Had Belgium’s challenge succeeded, the United States would have entered the Round of 16 without one of its most dangerous forwards.

Instead, Balogun is expected to start as the Americans chase a place in the World Cup quarterfinals.

After several days dominated by legal appeals, disciplinary rulings and political involvement, FIFA’s latest decision appears to bring an end to one of the tournament’s most closely followed off-field stories.

With Belgium’s request rejected and Balogun officially cleared to play, attention can now return to the pitch.

The Round of 16 meeting promises to be one of the most compelling matches of the FIFA World Cup 2026, with the United States hoping Balogun can make headlines for his goals rather than the disciplinary saga that has surrounded him throughout the knockout stage.
